Hey guys my VN has a pretty dodgy key that only opens drivers door and starts the ignition fine. Doesn't open passenger and rarely opens the tail gate. Went down to the local Mr Minit to get a key cut (was quoted $30 for a copy), but i was told if he was to copy the key, it will collapse the barrel in my ignition and it would then need replacing. He said he needs the VIN and Chassis numbers to do a cut via the computer ($130 for the job) and that apparently wont collapse the barrel.
Is this guy trying to rip me off? Or is this an actual problem?
ummm... yeah thats bulls**t... ive only got cut keys for my vn and ive never had a problem
my old man had a problem.. my mates nissan nx (pos) opened the doors, ignition and boot to my dads car.. hes old key wouldnt unlock the doors or the boot.. so we copied the key from the nx.. still same crap, try oiling up the key n insert it in the hole so it lubricates it.. i did it with my keys with my vn and they open perfectly i was having the same problem as yoursand yea just get a normal key cut lol.
i call shenanigans, i got a key cut for my vp and it didn't collapse anything, and i think it cost be at most $15, you can get it cut and put into a remote unlocking base thing for ~70 some places, this guy's ripping you off
What he probably means is that your original key is worn to the point that if it is copied it will probably do the same thing as your current key. He wants the VIN so he can cut the key to the original spec. That costs money because he has to buy the code from Holden. Is there a number on your key? That should be all he needs.
If you're going to lube the internals of a barrel, you're much much much better off using graphite powder, rather than oil. Oil will attract and retain dirt/dust/crap, whereas graphite powder wont.
I called holden a few weeks back and they said they wanted $40 for the key code. So the $40 for the code + $30 for the key + cutting doesnt add up to the stupid amounts hes asking for. Im gonna give it a shot and see what happens. Ill get it cut and also lube the barrel.
Plus the guy's mark up. He isn't a charity, he still needs to make money. If people are happy to pay someone else to do a job then in their opinion they aren't getting ripped. If you can do most of it yourself, then by all means do it.
jeeze mate i was told at a north qld holden that if the car hasn't been in to see them they charge $10 to look up details as they have to access the holden system. if it has been there for a service it's free.
PS the details are in the owners manual if you have it
I lost my key recently, took a door lock out and off to a lock smith, he cut a key to the code marked on the internals of the lock... however the lock was just as worn as the key had been and needed bits replacing for the new key to work,
the new key worked mint on the passenger lock (never gets used and my origional key wouldnt work with it) but not in the ignition..... damn.....
new ignition now so i have 2 keys lol... one to open door and one to start....
Dont loose your keys
Japanese scientists have created a camera with such speed that they now can photograph a woman with her mouth shut!
Thats kind of what he was saying to me. Because the barrel would be worn to the key, a new fully proper shaped key would collapse it. I dont know how his logic works though, I would have thought a copy of the worn key, giving it nice prominant edges would work better than a key code cut, which is like brand new, but the lock isnt :S
I just went out and bought a remote central locking kit with boot release (already have central locking) so im just going to install that.
