Edit :this is for a S1 Vn other models may require a different method.

    Assuming you have an auto?

Theres a way in which you use a socket and breaker bar which you put on the bolt then rest the bar on the chasis rail then turn over the motor OBV you dont want the motor to start so disconnect your coil pack or somehthing

I Dont much like that method,

    so what I did was

    1) Get a long extension bar,
    2) Drill a hole in the rim/edge of the balancer a lil bit bigger then the extension bar,
    3) Put one end of the extension bar in the hole you just drilled.
    4) Rest the other end of the extension bar on the chasis rail.
    5) Use a decent length breaker bar
    6) Take some steriods.... then brute strength to crack it.

If you need more leverage on the socket, get a piece of steel pipe and put it over the handle of the breaker bar

Once you get the bolt out, you will need a puller to get the balancer off.

Did mine for the second time yesterday.

An air impact gun works well if you have access to one.

The best mehtod it to take the fan shround off and use a rattle gun but it is a headache without the puller best you buy a puller it will save you alot of effort and time.

If its never been changed before I would say its a 99.999999% chance you will need a puller.

Even if it has been done before, the way its designed it has to come off perfectly straight or it will jam.

Trust me to save your sanity and the skin on your knuckles get a puller.

I did try a rattle gun, but either the compressor wasnt big enough or the gun was crapola. ( damn you supa cheap)

look on the forums list down the bottom, or quicklinks on the top bar, go into User Control Panel and in there you'll find something called Avatars i think. Once in you'll be able to navigate around to where you upload it.

Depends on how busted the balancer is, its basically just 2 pieces of metal joined together with rubber, so if its really bad it can still make a bit of noise but shouldnt be any where near as bad with the belt off.

After you take the belt off, you can turn the balancer by hand easily or theres fairly loose play left to right then the balancer need to be replaced.

Having said that being as old as they are now its quite possible some thing else needs fixing.

What type of noise. Heavy thud, rattle?

one way i have heard to refit the bolt and get it tight is to fill a pot with rope to block the engine from turning.
you will need the seal to for the balancer to stop oil leaking out.

I got mine off my old VN using the socket and extention bar in the chassis and turning the ignition on for half a second . Failing that you can take the starter motor out and jamb a screwdriver in there to stop the motor turning. As said before use a puller to get the balancer off so it comes of straight and won't damage the crank angle sensor .
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
