Question Rear Main Seal VN SS

I need to replace the rear main seal in the SS. It's 5l auto. I have been told it easier to take the motor and box out to do the job. Can it be done taking the trans out without causing too much grief.

I spoke to my mechanic 12 months ago about this. Mine dosnt need doing but we were just talking. He recons its an engine out job, or atleast much easier to just quickly lift the engine out and do it that way. He never said it wasnt imposible to do in the car, but i would assume its a bitch if he normally just lifts the engine out.
