is it spring side up or spring side down?
took mine out today and it was in spring side down, just thought I'd check here to make sure that's the right way.
also anyone used a highflow thermostat? any advantages? my vn s1 v6 in my hiace overheats slowly while going 100kp/h+ maybe the high flow thermostat would help this?
thanks
correct, the thermostat spring sits down in the thermostat housing. if it's overheating @ 100km/h you either have a stuffed thermostat, a flow problem or a radiator problem. when was the last time the thermostat was changed? how old is the waterpump? might pay to change that also at the same time, save loosing the coolant twice. also run a radiator/coolant system flush and make sure there is good flow.
also check the lower radiator hose that feeds the waterpump, see if it's collapsing

thnaks for the tips mate. New thermostat didnt do shit. Got a recent reco radiator in it according to the previous owner. I looked at the water pump and it seems to not be spinning perfectly straight, kind of wobbles a bit, so I might change that out and see how she goes.
do you have good flow of air into the radiator?
do you have thermo fans fitted?
are they after market fans?
the water should not flow through to fast as if it does then the water will not cool, same if the pump is rs and it flows to slow.
Have you bleed the system to get air out?
vn and vp systems have a habit of trapping air and over heating.
are the thermo fan blowing or sucking in the right direction? after market ones are reversable.
I have seen a brand new truck were the fans on the ac were blowing in the wrong direction so it did not get cold.

how do you get trapped air out ..........just wondering???
the little screw on the top of the thermostat housing.
Take the belt off and spin the water pump pulley by hand. Wiggle it around. See if it makes any sratching/grinding noises when it spins, and if it spins freely.
If the pulley bearing is on the way out, it's quite possible that the pump blades aren't turning in synch with the engine drive, causing it to flow below capacity.

it will be
1. water pump
2. airflow
3. trappped air
4. Tiny bloody leak
check in that order i think.
thanks again guys, some more good food for thought.
Ive never bled the air before. Do you just unscrew the bolt and screw it up again? Do you do this while the motor is off?
airflow to radiator is unobstructed so that seems ok.
vn thermo fan (with shroud) is fitted which seems to come on at around 100-105C. I also have a switch in cab that manually activates the fan when ever I like, which is rather frequently these days lol.
If it gets hot in traffic I flick on the thermo and it cools down to 80c almost instantly, its just when im cruising at 100kph that the temp keeps creeping up up up, even with thermo on.
it sucks the air through the radiator towards the back of the car.
guess ill bleed the air and change out the waterpump and see where I'm at.
easy way to bleed the system is to put your garden hose on the overflow return pipe and turn on slowly then undo the screw(you need pressure to bleed it) when water flows continuosly do it up and put the hose back.
normal temp for the engine is close to 95 degrees.
the v6 use a high pressure cap and run blood hot.
another thought, check the pressure rating of the cap if it is to low you will have problems.
do you have extractors?
it may help to look for exhaust leaks nd insulate the exhaust to.
the hiace will not let much heat out of the bay and the engine is bigger and hotter so look for other ways to help the heat issue.
how big is the radiator? is it the same size as the vn one?
hey
I went to bleed the air the other day but there is no small screw on the thremostat housing.
also, what is the stock pressure rating for the radiator cap?
radiator is smaller in the hiace than a vn, although its from a diesel and thats supposed to be the best hiace radiator. still there's a fair few v6 hiaces getting around and i'm sure they're not all overheating like mine.
i don't have extractors and it looks like the exhaust system was robbed off an old vn, could blocked cat be causing my overheating?
another thought is that my lpg consumption is like 20l/100k could my lpg converter be screwed and restricting coolant flow?
i hav'nt changed out the water pump yet because it looks like a f#@king nightmare of a job (thermo fan is almost hard up against front of pump). Looks like I might have to pull the radiator to get the thermo out as well.
v6 in van is fun but damn it makes some of the simplest things a royal pain in the ass.![]()
