    Default V6 5spd Manual on a V8?

hey guys i got a mate that may possibly want a v6 manual conversion put in his currently auto 5L, but thing is i thought the gearboxes had to be stronger, if he did do this though, what are the repercussions or what could we do to make sure nothing went wrong? cheers.

    It won't happen

    1) different bellhousing
    2) different input shaft length
    3) different input shaft splines
    4) different gear ratios

    It's possible to shove a V6 T5 behind a V8 motor on these conditions:

    1) buy a V8 bellhousing
2a) have an engineer "modify" the V6 input shaft to work (expensive)
or 2b) buy (from where?) a V8 input shaft, and have a specialist take the box apart to replace the shaft
    3) live with shorter gear ratios, more suited to the V6 motor

But it's not an ideal way to go about things Tell him to wait for a V8 box. For the price of getting the V6 box modified to suit, a V8 box could be yours very easily

seriously, swapping the bellhousing and input shafts isn't that difficult, you just gotta make sure you get the pre-load correct when fitting the input shaft.

i though foamy was going to use a V6 ratio T5 behind his V8 (when he finally gets around to the conversion)

But I'm guessing that if his mate is asking his mates to ask their mates simple questions, then he's probably not up to tearing down the gearbox and changing the shaft himself

Then there's the issue of obtaining a shaft, and obtaining the bellhousing - and I bet you won't find them in the specials box at the $2 shop

Immortality yep on the day I ever do get a manual in the VP it will be the V6 box, the ratios are much better for going fast, I have one in the shed. In the mean time I have been told the gear on the input shaft isn't a direct fit but I'm not so sure I beleive that. I'd have to count the teeth on the V8 version to be sure. While I was workign at the engineering joint the other year some kid came in with a V6 T5 and wanted it bolted to a 304. The boss made him an adapter plate from a chunk of alloy and it worked stock V6 shaft and all

Foamy, you could possibly use the V6 input shaft with a V6 clutch. I know for a fact that the V6 input shaft has a different number of splines to the V8 one. That's true as anything. But the splines only have to slide through the clutch So if you got the length modified to suit, and used a V6 clutch... (yuck?) then it would work.

You may have to get a V6 clutch plate suited to a V8 pressure plate, because you'll be running a V8 flywheel.

Then it's just a matter of getting the input shaft length right, so it sits in the spigot bush nicely.

hey morton, your pretty slick at dropping in/out a T5 trans howz about you drop yours out, then remove the input shaft (it's only 4 bolts) and then measure up the gear. i can get the input shaft out of my spare V6 T5 box and we can compare them for foamy

I was in some weird conversion like a rodeo or something some ute anyway so that was the least of his worries, how much difference is there in bellhousing length? because the shaft is only an inch

The spline are identical, I'm 100% 1000% sure about that, just that the V6 shaft is longer, this is why you can cut back the shaft and it works

Thats what i got told when i got my T5 V6 rebuilt, said all you need to do is get it machined back. For some reason he thought i was going to use it on a V8.

Actually you could be right, because I was comparing it to the V6 auto box. But the V6 auto box only has to slide into the torque converter, which could use different splines to a V6 clutch.

    Interesting

Greenfoam, how many splines does your V6 T5 input shaft have?

T5 V6 input shaft is 10spline. length, measured from the front face of the main gearbox housing (bellhousing removed) is approx 242mm. V6 bellhousing length is approx 232mm
