    Default The diff

when placing the car (auto V6) in D ,2 or 1 i can hear a PING! from the back of the car first thought was uni joints but they are less then 7 months old.
would it be the diff ?if so should i replace it with a reco one or find somthing worth bolting in it?

sounds like backlash in your diff gears, this can be adjusted by adding/removing shims.

on a non irs car its slightly complicated, how handy are you with tools?, its probably best left to an expert . shouldnt cost tooo much for them to do it.

but bearing in mind one can only adjust it so far, if the gears to badly worn then its not going to do much, (if anything)

Jack up the back of the car, put the car in nuteral with the handbrake off, and to the following:

    1) grab the tailshaft before the CV joint with one hand, and after the CV joint with the other hand. Check for play in the CV joint.
    2) grab the tailshaft before and after the uni joint. check for play again.
    3) grab the tailshaft altogether and check how much play it has before the diff engages in each direction
    4) turn each wheel back and forth, and check for play in the bearings.

That should narrow down where this "ping" is coming from.

My VQ had quite a bad lash-type knock when letting the clutch out in gears, and it turned out the tailshaft wasn't bolted tightly to the diff, and one of the driveshafts was coming unbolted from the back left wheel causing play and a knocking there. Nothing to do with the diff

not a "back yard, home job" there are 2 shims, one on each side and they are surface ground to the exact size required during manufacture to set backlash, wear pattern etc.

a loose bearing cap bolt can also produce a knocking sound. we had this happen in the inlaws BT1 when someone tried to steel the wheels but couldn't get the locknut off. wheel parted company with the car at approx 90km/h going down the motorway
