Ive got about 1000 dollars to spend on both the installation of new gears and the gears themselfs, what ratio would be best for a vn v8 auto? i dont mind what revs it will sit on the highway as long as it makes the car faster. Im leaning towards 3.45 to 3.7, any help would be great.
Also anyone that has changed their gears let me know the pros and cons of the swap over, cheers.
my understanding is 3.45, not much of a difference, 3.7-3.9 a nice difference off the mark and through the gears but still loosig some top speed in first and second, 3.9-4-11's lots of acceleration but affects top speed too much.
I want to hear from people who have gone from 3.08 to a higher ratio and determine what will be the best option for me. I want better off the mark ability and to pull through the gears faster but not be slowed down by reducing the top end speed. For example, if 3.7-3.9's were going to make me rev out in first below 60km/h and 2nd less than 100-110km/h i would not get them and would settle for 3.45's-3.55's
I personally have a set of 3.7s that I ran in my VP, and they were beaut. I wouldn't go lower than 3.7s.
3.9s could be fun since you've got an auto. With a manual you'd be changing gears all dayIf you're happy to rev a tad bit higher on the freeway, then 3.9s are easier to find, and a good performance kick.
I think you should look at no more than $500 supplied and installed.

3.7s for a manual and 3.9 for an auto. Those are the ideal ratios if you are going for no compromise performance and that's the end of that : ). That's for near stock motors or big cam type machines. Cars with hords of mid range punch like turbos will stay with 3.08s or 3.45s
You can definatly notice 3.45s they made the difference between no wheelspin and epic wheelspin for me but actual times dont really improve at all even with full traction it feels faster but its all an illusion. Still for me where 100% of my driving is on the highway 3.45s were the only choice
I got 4.11 in mine.
someone give me 3.9's

just get 3.9's.... i think it makes your gear change out of 2nd at about 100?
and besides, who cares about the speeds 150+, cant even legally go that fast![]()

I can get a set of either 3.45/3.7/3.9/4.11 on ebay for 250 but could source some cheaper through wreckers me thinks....
Sounds like 3.7 or 3.9 is the go, i know it will have to make at least a .5 second improvement on my current 6.8 second 0-100km/h times and 15 flat 1/4 mile (stock vn v8 with 2.5 catback, pod & greeny tune) All i need to know is- will i get 60km/h out of first and a tad over 100km/h in second gear with these ratios???
Thanks in advance.
throw away the pod.
Chuck a good panel filter + cold air intake on there, and you'll have another 0.2 on the quarter guaranteed.

Glad i managed to get a fresh set of 3:9's for my Senator!!
i want 3.9s for mine aswell.go to raceshift they will supply and fit for 550.
im on the gold coast so will have to either go somewhere around here or in brissie, OR use the little space i have and take my diff out and make a mess of the garage
3.7's sound the go to me all im after is more up and go off the mark for both acceleration and skids when planting it, at the moment has a factory lsd and spins 2 x 225's but you have to go 3/4-flatout off the mark- i want to be able to roll off the mark, flatten it and spin up
Can anyone here mention what speeds they rev out at with 3-7-3.9's in an automatic through first and second??
Cobez?????
id tell you if my speedo was correct lmao
is your a v6 or v8 cause it makes all the difference when the v8 can manage 10-15km/h more in each gear than a 6... would you say the cars faster now with them installed over the 3.08 ratio or would you happily go back to 3.08 or 3.45?
lol no way i would go back to the stock ratio......
mines a 6 and and it feels HEAPS better off the line/100kph but it could all be in my head, never know..... best way is to buy it and see if you like it![]()
suppose, my biggest concern is that its going to affect kickback acceleration.. like if i plant the foot at 50-60km/h or 90-100km/h it wont be as quick as it is now.....
its between 3.45/3.55 and 3.7 at the moment.
Lol, **** hectic raceshift, my mechanic has been doing diff rebuilds for 22 odd years, will barely charge me half of what hectic raceshift will charge and the job will be done 100% spot on for me as he is my uncles mate.
If i went to raceshift i'd be treated as just another customer, diff out, get the gears in quick, chuck it back in the car, get the cash, get the next customer.
I pay about $50 in labour all up for most shit my mech does on my car, and he takes his time on it and makes sure it's thorough. Takes a bit longer, but i couldn't care less if it means it's done right. Raceshift sound like a bunch of hectic gino's.
But not everybody's uncle is mates with your mechanic![]()

Yeah but i am referring to me![]()
*jealousy*
i payed 250 for installation.......
spool = 0
gears = 50
not bad considering the diff gears/installation and spool cost me 300 all up
lmao looking around gets you a damn cheap price, worth the extra time....
i remember some random diff place wanted to charge me 400 to put a spool in (that i was going to supply), i laughed and told him thanks anyways lol
cant believe people actually pay them prices :|
Ok for the cheapskate hero award.... I got the gears and new seals given to me $0. I bought the bearings trade price for like 30 bucks. And installed it myself $0
