Default mini spool = dangerous on street?

i'm interested in a minispool as my diff gears may need re-doing (excessive backlash) and i'm wondering on ppls opinions on ditching the lsd for a spool i know they make it easier to bake up and drift what else are they good for (stiffer chassis?)

more importantly just how dangerous can they be on the street?

i havent driven a minispooled car before and don't know any1 with 1..

also as far as diff gears go i think i will go for 3.9s i can live with extra fuel consumption for exxtra speed i was quoted $1300 drive in/out for new 3.9 gears + fitment by a diff place in o'connor, Perth..... sound reasonable?

    No there not dangerous!

Any car in the wrong hands is dangerous. In the right hands, it will be a pleasure to drive. You know which one you are, so decide based on weather you think you'll end up in a powerpole within 3 streets!

That price is a major rip.

$600 is what i paid for 2nd hand gears(3.45s) and a spool fitted to my car!

not dangerous at all, even in the wet they are so easy to control, its the single spinners that are more dangerous imo

a spool will drag a tyre on tight cornering like in hte car parks.
if you do a lot of that sort of driving then it will increase the tyre wear.

    Wrong and Wrong!

Its simple physics that the inside tyre will turn faster, but it doesn't drag it.

Once again, of course there is tyre wear, but i tested this theory out with tyres on my car as a daily with no burnouts, and even after 10,000, i couldn't notice signs of wear at all.

I was waiting for that response. people are starting to know your opinions on diffs pretty well.

For the little bit of tyre skip you get, one burnout will cancel that out anyway.

With a single spinner your tyres can only last 10000kms, its all how you drive it.

We were talking about this the other night actually....
People always say about how you will end up into a pole in a spooled car when it rains, and its bullshit even in the wet i feel like i have more control and grip then when i had the single pegger.....
Like stealthy said, its all about the person driving it... If you drive like an idiot whether its a spool/single/lsd you will end up into a pole

    btw go 3.9's (if auto)

    physics?
if the inside turn turns fast then what does it do?
stress the tyre casing or spin?
either of those option is not good.
I HAVE driven a old lsd falcon were the lsd had locked you could here it when going around corners.

as a side note, the old 4wd's say not to drive in 4x4 for any period on tarmac as the tyre will were due to the windup effect that they have.
The front diff gets loaded up and that puts extra strain on the tyres.
I had to stop to get my old 4x out of 4wd after about 1km on the road, on dirt this is not a problem.

By your reasoning the extra load place on the tyres by being pushed or dragged does not matter. Sorry mate it does.

i always thought on old 4wd they say not to leave it in 4x4 mode over a certain speed because it can stuff the diff? not designed to go that quick?

and an lsd is different to a spool

and the amount of wear is jack shit anyway lmao but who actually lets there tyre's last 10k? lol

C'mon guys, get real. The guy wants a spool for skids. Do you think he gives a rat's about tyre life? Seriously.

the reason you don't drive a 4x4 with locked axles is because it will start to "crab" with the steering axle wheels locked you will have major issues on a sealed road. this however does NOT apply to a rear wheel drive car as only the rear axle has been locked.

don't compare a 4X4 with RWD. they are very different.

there isn't any need to get new gears, hence the steep price tag. some 2nd hand 3.9 gears wil do fine. the gear sets are fairly tough and unless your putting a 1000hp though em i don't think there will be any issues with used gears.
