an lsd provides traction to both rear wheels in a straight line and directs power accordinly between the wheels when cornering for safety.

A spool directs power to both rear wheels fulltime making cornering dangerous for road use

LSD for safety, spool for dangerous defective driving although for skids and competition events a spool is the way to go.

heard theres not too much difference between 3.7 and 3.9, but depends on what you want to use the car for... if you want big skids a lots of acceleration and care about nothing else go 3.9-4.11, if you want to keep the revs low on the highway and keep it a bit more drivable go 3.45-3.7... im also in the process of making a decision on gear ratios, i want more acceleration off the mark but i also want to keep top end speed throughout the gears so im going with either 3.45 /3.55/3.7 MAX.

when you up the diff ratio you'll need to get a speedo corrector kit, jaycar sell them, not sure who else.

you can easily fit the speedo corrector kit yourself. and a spool isn't dangerous

u can get spools off ebay for around 80bux. a set of 3.7 or 3.9 diff gears is around the $200 mark. i suggest getting a professional to fit the diff gears so the right backlash is set in the gears otherwise you can damage your gears.

Both those statements are crap and not true

A spool is perfectly fine as long as your not an idiot, and if your an idiot your going to kill yourself no matter what you have
Goodluck finding 3.7's there pretty rare but 3.9's you can get from pretty much any skyline diff go to a cheap wreckers and get the whole diff minus axle's and brakes and it should be cheaper
And when you buy the centre your looking for go get them installed
If your in the west i can give you a number of a guy who done mine? cost me 250..

call/go into a bunch of wreckers and for prices on a r31 skyline diff.... then just ask if they can take it out
    buy the spool
take the diff and spool to whoever you get to install them, they can remove the gears, it might actually be easier for them if they do so they can put the gears in the same place they came out...

First statement is true matey, a normal open wheeler or lsd will transfer power between the wheels when cornering which is what you want. Evenely distributed power throughout the corners IS dangerous in the wet and thats why there illegal.

Second statement is completely up to you but there banned for a reason...

    1. Well who the hell goes 50km/h into a corner in the wet? only an idiot, that's who....
if you have drove one daily you would know they are fine for cornering, i can actually take corner pretty quick without loosing traction....

    2. Yes they are illegal but not dangerous, people just don't have common sense these days...

Question: An R31 Skyline diff minus brakes and axles would fit a commo?? Perfectly??

Can this be a DIY job? If so i'm going straight to the wreckers!! It's a shame I only know Commodore wreckers though.. Might have to shop around!

nope, not a direct fit... different mounting points and shit..

    but the internals are interchangeable....
