Question Speedo/alert won't work - replaced cluster, still won't work

Hi all - I originally posted this in VR/VS but since the clusters are nearly the same I figured I'd give it a crack here?

Recently my cluster broke (my fault, broke the ribbon cable on the back) making the speedo not work. I tried to fix it by soldering the connection directly but I know I shorted it on something (I think the adjacent pin/s) before destroying the ribbon beyond repair.

Now I bought a new cluster and to my bitter disappointment speedo and speed alert both still will not read anything, I checked the ribbon cable on the back of the speedo, and all of the other gauges are working (it's from a S1 VR going into my S1 VS).

Fuse 12 (speed signal) is not blown so please people I need more ideas about what's happened. With the ALDL cable it can show the speed on the notebook so I know not all hope is lost.Oh, and my car doesn't have cruise control. Thanks heaps for any ideas and advice... sucks not knowing how fast I'm going (and obviously illegal because I don't have a working odometer).

if your getting a speed signal from the sensor then your only option would be to fix the wiring you destoryed, maybe get some parts from a wreckers and do some tinkering.

Thanks for the idea eliminator, the wiring which I know was destroyed was in the cluster which I replaced - unless it's possible the wiring behind the dash got damaged from being shorted somehow - is that possible?

oh i thought that you damaged the wiring at the back where the cluster plugs into.... if your getting speed signal then theres nothing wrong with the speed sensor, if you replaced the cluster & the same problem is occuring then i would imagine your only option would be the wiring connecting to the speed sensor/ecu
