Default Have we crossed the 5 litre vs V6 threshold

Something happens with every model of car sooner or later. When the top or the range and less sold cars become more common than the base models. Anyone coul dbe forgiven for thinking most HK-HG Monaros had V8s infact lots of people wouldn't believe you if you told them most were small red motor 6's. Same thing happened with Toranas, how long since anyones seen a 6 cylinder Torana or one that can't cut an 11 second 1/4 in the Toranas case:P.

Anyway they sold what 80,000 V6 VN-VS a year? and about 2000 5 litres. I can remember how it was an extremely rare sight to see a V8 VN. Even if the ratio of V6s to 5 litres now is 10:1 (I believe there's less V6's than that) this means there's only at the most 20,000 V6's VN's left assuming all 5 litre VN's have survived and we know that's not the case, but I'm sure around half of them have. So how long till the 5 litre becomes more common, it allways happens sooner or later, when it does you'll know the VN is almost gone I don't think there's more than about 15,000 left and probably droping at more than 2000 per year

i live in hoontown (surfers paradise area) and vn-vs v6's are common as hell. v8's are quite rare to see, ive only seen 1-2 vn v8's on the road in the past year..

Everyones driving turbo 4 cylinders and ls1 utes which is the smart way to go if you have the cash, or loan approved!

That's an interesting question. VR/VS I do feel like I'm starting to see more SS's and HSV's than executives. Although that might be mainly because they are the ones that get my attention...

remember that all v6's that got written off went to the tip.

all v8's that had a salvagable driveline and got written off, converted a once v6 to a v8

so I'd say the v8's are hanging around, whereas you see anywhere up to 30 v6's at any given wreckers, at any given time!

    true that..

you never find a v8 in the wreckers..

if it was a v8 its been stripped of all the good bits and may as well be an executive.

the vr/s range is getting really cheap at the moment so more and more people are thinking why not..

at least parts are cheap for anything vn to vs. and vt is starting to get the same way..

more and more appearing at the wreckers. not being sold off and fixed.

It's true, the V8s are slowly growing in numbers The V6s are being written off at a phenomenal rate, now that the cars are worth nothing, and a small fender bender is too expensive to repair. It won't be very long at all 'till VNs join the ranks of the HQ. Once abused and taken for granted, but then cherished ^_^

here in vn's there is only 1 v8, a atlas grey ss the rest are old granny cars and still v6's.
the only v8's are the genuine ss's vp's and later and then not many of them either. like 3 i can think of. Many of the locals got this weird idea that a std vp is great and fast.
My ex's ex cop v6 with extractors and a couple small mods keeps time with a mid worked vp. It is the exception to the norm. My girls is stock and way slower.

v8's may be more common in the city but out here in small country towns one or 2 people tend to grab all the wreaked v8's for their own use and are hard to get to part with them.

I see many many V6s, hardly any v8s of the older models
Its sad you can go months without even seeing a VL on the road now, VC-VH you can forget it.

infact I see so many SS LSs it gets boring, I swear 1/3 VE owners in WA own an SS
Mortons right they will go from trash to treasure, and people will probably pay good money to restore a VN with the ol buick to stock standards. Theres still much love even for the old 308 engine. I love the performance of the LS cars but I hate everything else about them.

Oh shush you guys, that's mean

Do you think though that a lot of the "V8s" that we're seeing these days though are V6s that have been converted (and possibly badged as an SS etc) and not necessarily original V8's?.

I remember when I bought my VL, a genuine V8 was HARD to find, and they still are in a way......but there are oodles of 6's converted to V8's floating around. I still see quite a few VLs in my area (seems to be VL-Central around here) and so many of them are V8's it's not funny.

Is it not a dream (and sometimes becomes a reality) for a young bloke (or girl) to buy their favourite commodore - older model and a 6cyl so it's cheaper to buy and whack a V8 in it? I know it was for me - I was desperate to convert my VL Berlina to a V8 Calais - but could never get enough funds together.

    VC-VH you can forget it.
Saw a gorgeous red VH earlier this week - she was mint, totally original and it was great to see. I haven't seen one (or older) for a LONG time. Come to think of it, I don't even see VKs around here much anymore either.

I presume you mean 5 Litres - and they aren't growing in numbers, just declining far slower than the V6's.

There are still tons of V6's getting about and I think it will be at least 5 years before there are less than V8's. Country areas a little sooner as they seem to have a higher proportion of V8's to begin with.

I doubt it. V8's are still relatively cheap to buy as an original factory fitted item. There are a few around but why would anybody bother trying to clone a VN/VP SS???

Good question - I know I wouldn't bother. Not a fan of the VN/VP myself.

But I do and have seen it done.

Meh, whatever floats their boat I guess.

Only 200,066 VN's made for local market.
    5,178 local VG's
    9308 local VQ's

230266 in total to share to V8's

    VU engine numbers go from 579000 to about 604600 = 25,600 V8's

    So that's about 204,666 V6's

I'd say 95% or more of the V8's are still going.

There's ALOT of 5 litres VN-S's here, 10,000 people in the main town and there would be well over 100 of them maybe 200 they would come very close to being more in number than the V6, quite a few in older cars as conversions too. Only about 1 in 30? VH's were SLE's now look there are at least 50% SLE's pity really because the SL/Xs had a nicer interiour really but they are pretty much extinct. In my very little outskirts town 1000 people and theres 5 VQ's, 2 VP 5 litres execs, one VP SS, a few 5 litre utes about 2 5 litre VN sedans. There's not that many running early V6's but theres a fair few in storage on lawns . It was the high scrap metal prices that made them come unstuck. Now more of them are being parked like the US navys reserve fleet (for future use... maybe..)

Well WA aint full of lebos who only want a turbo'd VL which can dose, I dont get to see old commodores much anymore, thats why I dont really like the newer models so much cos I have see them all the ****in time, same as Sigs are everywhere in Wogland not in WA, sigs are not common at all.

It all depends where you live really. The city I live is absolutely full of VR-VS execs. Like 1 in 8 cars is one. But when I went to picton (top of NZs south island) I only saw a handfull of commodores older than VY. A couple of VR SSs and a red VS calias. No executives at all.

Around where I am theres definatley more V6'S around than the v8's in the vn-vt and the super 6 is rarer again from vs-vt
This is proberly due to the V8 and super 6 being raided for other projects over the years by hot rodders and enthusiest for the running gear as they became cheaper
and if you start talking about models , the statesman, calias, and Berlina are getting thing on the ground aswell because they are often worth more in parts than they are whole , the same thing happened to the Hk - wb holdens ,I lost count on how many Broughams, premiers, and statesmans I see raided for their running gear and parts
for 6cly Monaros and kingswoods etc
