I have a VP with the standard open diff. Can i get it locked? roughly how much would this cost and would it pose many drivability issues. A friend had a VN SS with a locked diff and it was awful to be in under about 30km/h the whole car would shudder. Would mine do this?
yes you can get it locked. well i cant say it will or wont shudder, but i can tell you if shes a locker, shel skip when you go around corners and easily everyone will know its locked, its great fun on a thrashabout but if your going to be driving it everyday, its not going to be comfy in the carparks! costs isnt usually a problem you can go in 2 directions, minispool (around $100) or welded ($20? for a mate with a welder), both = locked diff and are dangerous among other things, minispool requires opening the diff centre and putting in a solid block to lock the axels, welded jst requires taking the diff centre out and welded the gears together wid a mig / arc welder inside which also locks the axels in the same manner but supposedly not as strong (which i agree with, others have different opinions). Youll go through tyre ware obviously more because both rear tyres will ALWAYS be rotating around at the same speed / time, youl get a slightly better takeoff from the lights in a drag (if it were the situation) and yes undoubtably once learnt the skill prioperly be able to enjoy the thrills of some serious sideways actions. just letting you know now, just cos u got a locked diff, dont make u pro DK. have fun and dont kill yaself.
i disagree with the OP... its more predictable, ive had spools in nearly all my cars which were daily drivers and stealthy has too... i suggest you get some decent rear end bushes because the stock ones just fall to bits with a spool, dont weld your diff, its irreversable and alot weaker than a spool
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
i agree. i had a lsd in my first car. and it was predictable if anything else.. if it got wet.. and the foot went down.. sideways action would occur.. no ifs no buts.
the non lsd i drive now.. not so much.. sometimes it will slide out under power sometimes it wont.. its annoying at the least. downright dangerous at best. so i know better then to even think about it.. as i prefer to get the girl home in one peice.
going to get it minispooled as soon as as rudd shows me the money. more traction is very nice... though i am a little concerned about how bad she will behave in the carpark.
Torque sensing lokka are also another option that most overlook.......
basically a torque sensing lokka works as an openwheeler and when cornering you will hear a ratchet sounds of the gears, but as soon as you put the foot down it will "lock" and the car will act as if it was spooled!
Much easier option for a daily that wants to do u turns in car parkslol....
yes you can get it locked........ a spool is about $80-$100..... and anywhere from 100-500 installation, depends on how much you shop around and how stupid they think you are..... (one guy wanted to charge me 450 to put a locked centre in)
and your car might or might not shudder.... depends on the car and your suspension/tyres.....
its predictable as anything and even in the wet i personally think i have more traction then with the single..... might be different for others but thats my thought...
but you might find it irritating, some love it and some hate them, i personally love the thing![]()
I always put it to people this way:
If you have a single pegger, and you get it out sideways in the wet, and power out of it, it'll keep yo-yoing from side to side, getting worse and worse. If you try and ease off the throttle, it'll slowly come back, but you need to get it just right.
If you have a locker, and you get it out sideways, powering out of it gently will straighten you up, and backing off gently will straighten you up.
I'm personally a fan of a tight LSD - and even though it locks up around corners in the wet, I know when it's going to do that, and I compensate for it. If you can put up with the tyre scrubbing in car parks, then a locker is the way to go. I think people know about the legal risks by now, there's no use in patronising them. If you're sensible about how you use it (that's irony right there) then a locker is awesome.

I aggree with Morton, nothing can beat a tight LSD, got a super tight walky LSD in mine, if you jack it up, 2 burly blokes cant spin the wheels opposite ways, it openwheels fine in the dry but as soon as it gets the tiniest bit of torque applied, its locked.
it does get a bit hairy in the wet especially when the corvette servo kicks it into 2nd half way round the corner at decent revs but at least its predictable
Thanks for all the info guy's, yeah when i first got the car i got really excited for the first rainy day, but after being out there in the wet with the open diff, it's fair to say now, when it rains, i get a bit scared!!! It just won't come back once it's out there, and once a wheel starts to spin. it will just keep spinning and spinning meanwhile your going no where. Also the panhard bar is extremely loose could be responsible for some of it's poor handling issuues!!!
Open wheelers/LSDs = dangerous in the wet
Spools/lokka's = 100% predictable 100% of the time!

Snapping axles isn't even a con when it comes to spools, since its so rare, and only on previously worn axles that you face a problem (and keep in mind, a tight LSD will also snap axles, as it has the same effect as a spool until it wears out)

ive had a spool in every car ive ever owned except my first car wich i welded, wich ill never do again not strong at all, never had any shuttering or anything like that and personaly i love the ticking noise you get when turning slowly and as for traction in my ss now if i floor it from the lights im skatin all the way up the road and in the rain ill accelerate not even half throttle and it will skate all the way through 3rd and half way through 4th its very dangerouns if you dont know what you are doin so be carefull
doin skids for the kids and doughnuts for the grown ups
I disagree, Manual 5L with a full spool, and my mum could drive it and not break traction!
Theres only one element thats dangerous, and thats the driver!

Its the age old argument tho. People sacrifice the 'legality' issue to not have to freshen it up every 6 months, blowing the cost right out!
You've never driven one, so don't bother commenting on what people have 'told' you are characteristics of a spool, cause chances are, they havn't driven one either!

btw troy5L your in the western suburbs yeah? if you come to a taylors lakes meet ill take you for a ride in a spooled car......
That way you know if you like it..... (not having a go, just alot of people never have a ride in one but have an opinion, atleast you will be able to comment)
spools are the best.
