Sorry for the newby question, but where is the temp sender unit on a VP? I've just bought a tidy VP but it's drinking fuel at an alarming rate. According to the PhoenixMechanical site it's a common fault. What is involved to change the sensor - do any other components need to removed to gain access?
thanks in advance
front of the motor where thermostat is... part number 231.058 from vague memory, but ill have to check

Cheers mate - got a rough idea how much a new one is worth?
Hmmm...I take it the thermostat is where the top radiator hose is, with the bleed screw? If so I can't see any sensors there?
Look further to the right, under the alternator.
k thanks for that. How do you release the tension from the accessory belt tensioner to remove the alt?
You get a socket on it and a bar and pushthe whole thing is on a spring
i think i sell the temp senders for about 15- 20 bucks... DONT quote me on that though lol.... ill get a price on monday and let ya know
interested to know how a faulty temp sensor is making your car drink like a rotor though....

This is what I was going off - check the bit where it says "Temperature sender unit"
Faults - VP Electrical
I had another VP earlier this year on loan and it only went through half the fuel this one does.
From what I've seen: Massive fuel consumption is usually a result of a bad o2 sensor, but the coolant temp can contribute... Just never heard of it on a massive scale like that.![]()
So if I have a bad O2/temp sensor, would the check engine light come on? (mines not on).
Come to think of it my idle is a little erratic. Not rough by any means, but it does stumble a bit.
yeah your cars being a pig, check your map sensor, spark plugs/gaps, oxy sensor. how dirty your throttle body is ( spray some carby clean down there and give it a clean out. etc
search this forum for the diagnostics thread, will tell you step by step how to test and what the codes mean... cause theres minimal chance that that its your temp sender.

Cheers for that. Can you clean an oxygen sensor with carby clean, or are they generally non-serviceable?
cheaper to just buy a new one.... is your car fairly clean... has it been on gas... try finding out the diagnostics codes first mate and that will point you in the right direction.

Never been on gas, ignition leads look new, and apart from the fuel consumption and power steering leak it's in pretty good shape. Everything works except the odo, which appears to have stopped working last year at 175,000 km, judging by some old service stickers. I've got a cog coming this week. She's a pretty clean and tidy rig for $1200.
it may not be the sungear mate, could be dry solder joints on the odometer motor pcb.

Bloody old cars! lol
Thanks for the tips, I'll no doubt have a bunch more questions along the way.
all good, pm me if you get stuck champ

Cheers mate, thanks again.
Just found the "How to" section of the forum. What a bloody good idea!

Did the check computer paper clip thing, came back with 12. That's normal, right?
Dodgy coolant sensor will show up on a auto, the torque converter lock up either wont be working or will take alot longer to come in than it should (44?c)
Just for reference mine broke not long ago and it was costing me over 100km per tank and the only way I knew what was wrong was because I know what and when the converter should be doing it's thing and it wasn't right. Imagine if you had a broken coolant sensor o2 AND regulator lol then you would be on like 250-300 ks a tank![]()
So a dodgy O2 sensor should return a reading as well, right?
Whats the regulator problem you mention Greenfoam?
