Default can i remove my cat convertor?

if i get an exhaust system fabricated, can i do without the cat converter. I've noticed some places can charge between $400-500 just for a high flow cat convertor. Will a car without one make any more power, and will it sound any diffrerent. Oh yeah, is it dangerous.........? i'm happy to take the defect risk if thre's significant gains in power and money saving!

IIRC the fine is something like $10-20,000 dollars - not to mention you would be an asshole because of the extra pollution it puts out.

Don't do it man, you might get a pinch more power, but seriously, it's not worth it. The extra emissions are definitely dangerous, and your hip pocket is in big danger if your ever get caught.

a high flow cat should not cost more than 250 dollars, any more and your being ripped.

The only way you would be able to time the gain no cat makes would be on the drag strip and it's a VERY minimal gain we are talking half a tenth of a second or something:0, well beyond being able to be felt by a human

Nope, in NSW it's 200 penalty units for an individual, which is $22,000 (or possibly more now, as that was the 2007 price for penalty units, it may have gone up)

Does anyone no anyone who has got a $22,000 fine? people get bailed out of jail for murder for less haha. maybe if you get caught heaps of times for same offense. I think its more of a scare tactic. because i know my mate couldnt afford that kind of fine. So i know he only had a small fine. He cant even afford to fill up his car half the time haha.

The big fines aren't from the Police or RTA. They'll just give you a defect.

The EPA can issue the huge fines.

Your mate got off very easy, but for a first offense they generally will not dish out he maximum fine which is atleast $10,000 in any state, with some being larger.

Amusingly, you can delete it over here. In fact my old VL never even had one, and on top of that I deleted the front muffler!

My new VN setup won't be running one either, as I do run a bit of avgas every now and then for 'track use' and the lead will kill it anyway.

I was just out in the shed starting my VH. My eyes will be sore for the rest of the night. Trust me you made a good choice in keeping the cat, they are a premium invention

Yeah man, polluting the enviroment is pretty greasy. If you do, your wife/girlfriend will leave you for a guy that drives a hybrid, your dog/cat will run away and a holy war between heaven and hell will set the mortal realm on fire, plunging human civilisation as we know it into the stone age. For god sakes man! DONT DO IT!

Think about your children and your childrens children! If you pollute the enviroment your nothing but a child killer!

On a more serious note, removing your converter will increase power slightly, reduce weight (thus increasing speed) and make your machine slightly less complicated thus increasing reliability (you will never have to worry about a clogged converter). If I were you I would do it, all this stuff about the enviroment is bullshit. If you want to save the enviroment then make sure your motor is in good tune, thats all we can do.

Jeremy Clarkson has an interesting view on global warming. No bastard has ever managed to cure the common cold, so if we warm the planet up... BAM problem solved

Besides, worlds running out of oil so I best burn my fair share.

Mate, I drive a V8, I'm no tree hugger, but do you actually know what a cat does?

It's biggest functions are in reducing nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide emissions, both of which seriously **** people up, not just the trees buddy.

If you really think 1kg of weight difference will matter, suggest you take a crap before you go for a drive...

Yeah man, its pretty retarded on how they plan to solve it. Building heavy cars with two engines, one small petrol engine that burns fossil fuels and one electric motor that uses electricity that was generated in a coal powerstation. How can they call it a solution!!

Did you see the episode where they raced a BMW M5 and a Toyota Prius with one liter of fuel? The BMW won by a couple of laps I think

Can't say I have, but I reckon 1kg is about right. Individual results may vary, some are more full of it than others

I have done. And I am perpetually amused by the fact the big lithium batteries are worse for the enviroment in the long run. I don't care how efficent the bloody Prius is, people driving them look like retards. I for one am still outraged that Chevy managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the final design of the Volt. The concept was awesome, but the production model is, well, another prius-esk piece of crap.
