I have a VP V6 series 2, i was fiddling around trying to remove the bellmouth but i didnt have a socket to reach one of the bolts. So out of curiosity, i took it for a run with the whole air intake system removed, so the throttle body open is exposed. The difference in instant throttle response was AMAZING, before there was a bit of a dead spot when you first apply the accelerator, now it's gone completely. It also idles smoother. Theres quite a noticile increase in perfomance aswell, and it makes a nice noise when you open it up, you can really hear the air sucking in. But, my question is, can i leave it off, can i put something over the opening on the throttle body (like a stocking or something ) to still filter what goes in? Are there any potential dangers from leaving it exposed?
ill admit its pretty fun too ay but probs not the best thing for your engine.
just increased engine wear, thats all

Funny enough I did a gtech run in my old VN V6 just like that to see what happens and it was a couple tenths slower. Yes it made more sound but it was slowerso you imagined that part of the story
Well mate no 2 cars are the same, and does make a noticible increase in performance. I havent imagined anything, I'm just concerned about hot air entering-
You go and time it and then tell me how much you gained
Can i build something to cool the air entering the throttle body, that way i wouldn't be worried about hot air entering the motor. Obviously if the air entering dosent have to pass through a small passage into an airbox, through and airfilter, out of the airbox, up through a pipe, round a sharp bend before finally entering the throttle body, then is good right?
It only has to flow 400 cfm so long as the air is as cold as possible by the time it gets into the chamber you win since it only takes a splt second to get into the engine all you need to worry about it getting it from somewhere cold in the first place
can the standard airbox be modified in anyway to allow more airflow?
Yes just run a sealed pipe from the front bumper to the bottom of the airbox same as everyone else does![]()
What do you mean by sealed pipe, like the silican pipe sections you can buy, or is it something else. Does the setion of pipe go all the way down past the bumper?
going faster wouldve been a thing of your mind cuz of it being louder you wouldve thought it was going better![]()
Eureka styles!
Well for ages now my car has been really hard to start, have to pump to gas and shift into gear without it stalling. When i put it into park or nuetral it would just stall. Fter removing the whole air intake, it started straight away and just sat thier idling for a few minutes no worries. What would have been behind this?
what's your air filter like ?
Eureka styles!
Do you service your car regularly? If your air filter was REALLY clogged removing might make a difference.
Air filter was replaced couple of weeks ago along with plug's , leads, fuel and oil filter- still idled rough and was hard to start. Now that the throttle body intake is out in the open, it idles smooth and starts first go-?
Okay. Removing your intake at the throttle body:
no you have not gained power
no this is not more efficient
yes it will kill your car.
Here's a few rules:
1) colder air is denser, and makes more power
2) your factory intake system flows more than your car will ever need
3) more throttle response /= more power
4) good air filters are ones that keep dirt out. this is a FAR more important characteristic than "flow".
You've probably changed something else you've missed, which has caused the rectification of your strange problems. I'd suggest slowly reassembling the intake bits, and seeing at what point the engine goes all sloppy againTrial and error, mate. Trial and error. Don't ask us, we have no idea

Keep the cat convertor. Keep the muffler. Keep the air intake.
Maybe just sell the car and buy a bicycle.
how many bloody threads are you going to make? sheeeeeesh!
go look at mortons old vp.... if you want a quick v6..... do what he done, every single step.......
and as for your exhaust (cant be bothered finding the thread) the best flowing exhaust is on that goes straight into the cabin....... people will tell you otherwise but dont listen, what you need to do is cut a hole in the floor and it going directly into the cabin, trust me! 0-100 in less then 5 seconds..... *sarcasm*
