first off, im new to the site, so if this is in the wrong section, my bad. as for the car, its a vp commodore. the short story is, the car had been making a knocking noise for a while, a mate of mine said "it might be the torque conv. check for a loose bolt". got the car up and nothing. i kept driving for a while noise died. then i started it after work one day, the noise was back and when i put it in drive to go it felt like i was driving with the handbrake on. now im no mechanic but i got a hold of another gearbox(off a staion wagon, dont know if it makes a difference), pulled the old one out and put the new one in.now, like i said im no mechanic, imay have put it back in wrong, but the car starts fine. i can take the hand brake off why the cars in park and it wont roll, i put it in drive and it rolls down the hill, i put it in reverse and it just kept rolling down the hill. my question is firstly (1)was it the gearbox or did i just ruin my car (2)when i was tightening the bolts, the last one sort of straightened the gearbox to line up with the tail shaft, there was a cracking noise. so i was wondering if i could of broken something in there.thanks for any help you can give me. b.t.w. the starter motor went back in no worries, all three leads were re-connected, and yes i put tranny fluid back in. thanx
did you make sure you put the torque converter all the way in the box and turned it to lock it into the pump in the trans if not you probably broke the oil pump in the trans

did you make sure you pushed converter back three clicks and it didnt come forwards when you put gbox up coz if done wrong it will chew pump up
i didnt need to pull the torque conv. out. but it wouldnt spin any way? is that a bad sign. like i said im no mechanic
yeah torque convertor has 2 notches on it that have to line up did you do that properly?

so you left the converter on the engine and took the gear box out??
yeah thats how i did it. i took the long way did i?
not the long way the wrong way LOL.you could get it fixed pretty easy just probably pushed the pump back into the box.or it could of munched it

yea it sounds like you have stuffed it i allways take the converter out and put it in gearbox first you have ether stuffed gear box pump or the converter
i took it out by dropping the tailshaft, disconnecting the middle exhaust, jacking up the back-end of the gearbox and disconnecting the xmember, then all 5 bolts at the front of the gearbox
take the inspection cover off undo the converter once it is undun turn the converter and push it back towards the back of car and it should pop back three times so it is touching the box hosing and grinding aganst it now put the bolts in and tighten it up if it dosnt fix its stuffed.
allright ill give that a try after work tomorrow. thanks for your help people
not a problem hopfuly its not stuffed let us know how you went
ide say its more than a little too late for that the pump will be pushed way in now if you cranked the bolts to pull the trans onto the engine.i to have done this before myself years ago to my HQ auto i thought it was in all the way but it wasnt ruined to box and i stopped when it wouldnt mate up with the engine and relocated the torque converyer.but it was too late did get it to go but it wouldnt change gears properly and heaps of other issues.
