I wound my car out a little today, when it got above 140, the gearbox kept going back to 3rd, then to 4th, then back to 3rd again and so on, is this normal for it to do this.... each kick back became more violent as the speed increased, i stopped at 180km/h for safety reasonsjust out of curiosity, has anyone ever topped out their Vn-VP V6...?
someone close this thread, stupid thread which will just get an argument about how it was on a private road, highest speed limit is 110 i believe so no need to worry about the trans playing funny games at 140.

TVR, it was done on a salt lake near Captain Cook bridge at like 3 in the morning....
yeah and i really dont care if u speed or what not, i was more so saying it for ur advantage, someone will come in and say blah blah blah doing it on public roads, happens with every other single one, then you'll get people saying why do you need to go that fast and worry about your trans making that noice.
Sorry if i have offended you

Sorry to have snapped at you then
normally the gearbox will stay in 3rd at WOT and you need to back off a long way to get into 4th but max rpm in 3rd is just about clean off the clock then you need a bit of time in 4th to finish it off ide say its just at that point of tps where its not sure what gear to be in to much load for 4th not quite enough load to hold 3rd either more gas and stay in third or less and stay in 4th
I used to have a VP Calais V6 back in the day and had it up 190KPH on my local airport run way (lucky the boss was as lazy as i was) but would only do 190 and stop and wouldn't change into top gear, but no need to try it out on public roads, hope that helps.
And i think there's a difference between speeding to say overtake or in a safe environment (race tracks, club days, salt flats) and out and out boy racing you tend to value your life more as you get older, or as you learn your not invincible.![]()
Any idea why it wouldnt go into top gear, 4th, or overdrive, is still a true gear though or is it not...?
overdrive is there for fuel enomy not more speed.
it would come down to speed load tps and kickdown adjustment.
also 4th may be slipping a little so the box drops one then re engages 4th.
If you're having such a big issue with it, pull the shifter down into 3rd.
Oh, and that other question OP asked? 220 was no issue.

haveing it in 3rd in my VS ( i know it prob different then a vn/vp) makes me car not wanna do morn then 160...(private runway) but when i did it in 4th it went to 210 at half throttle but had to slow as was running outta road:P...still had half more throttle left lol was reving at about 3500 rpm tooi dunno how right it was but yeh i would have thorght it would have reved higher...on a plus note i was thinking of dragging a plane:P
lol yeah, my mate's runway wasn't long enough to reach 210 at half throttle. He only has a small Cessna.
But it's normal to be doing 3500rpm in 4th. In "THEORY" your car can manage 260kph at 5000rpm, but we all know the V6 doesn't have enough torque in overdrive to combat wind resistance at those speeds. That, and it would take you two miles to stop.![]()

CBF reading whole thread,
Im not telling ya what to do, but just take it easy mate, last thing you want is for your box to stuff up & possibly lock up on you (and the rear wheels) @ that speed! Strap her to a Dyno and get a mech to take a look @ what the problem is.

Its the kickdown cable, its designed to kickdown at a certain percentage of throttle. Say its at 60%, as soon as you hit 60% throttle it will kickdown ot the next gear, so it will not stay in top gear, MAYBE if you revved it out in 3rd it will grab 4th, never bothered to test it myself lol. You could always disconnect your kickdown cable to test, if your that serious about it, but FFS dont bother coming on here saying you've done it in a public enviroment. It only pisses people off caus it reflects bad on the forum and commodore community and we cop enough crap as it is, not to mention you can get caught yourself for posting it on a public forum, its happened before.
