yes you can and what you will need is:
8 bolt flywheel / pressure plate / clutch plate (preferably Heavy Duty)
    Manual startermotor
    Manual tailshaft
    Manual gearbox / houseing
    clutch pedal / cable steup
    Manual computer
Manual consol surround / plating / gearstick / knob etc

and yes you can do it yourself, just be patient about it

no probs and if you decide to buy a current conversion for sale, people tend to buy a brand new clutch plate too just so you know the life of the clutch after the conversion and usually the ones you get in a conversion kit are worn. Reason i say get a heavy duty one is itl last a longer and a bit more of a beating

On the VN and VP commodores the only function of the auto controlled by the ECU is the torque converter lockup. Therefore manual and auto computers are the same item. You just have to terminate the wire running from the ECU to the torque converter. VR onwards have different ECU's for manuals and autos.

it will only confuse the guy if u start alking bout re-wiring the computer etc, easier to just get one of a manual.

yeah but they're no different to an auto one.

the tune might be sliiightly different - but not enough to worry about.

best thing to do is get the 'manual extension loom' from a manual... that clips in under the radio part of the center console.

if you can't find one of these (rare) just work out which wires from the auto are for your inhibitor (park/neutral start only switch) and bridge them together.

you'll also have to wire up your reverse lights.

then to put the icing on the cake, speak to greenfoam about a tuned memcal to replace your old auto one - he can put the manual tune on there, along with a few bits and peices to make it go a bit better

Why? they're the same and he'll still be using the same loom, he'll have to terminate the wiring anyway.

dont need re wire the computer at all, the only wiring you need to do is extend the reverse wiring and wire up the inhibitor thing that lets you start the car in park so you can start it anytime, im driving around on my auto ecu and memcal and there hasnt been a single problem , still drives the same as b4

I'd highly recommend buying a damaged car from the auctions, or a defected car.

I bought a manual VN rego'd and running for $1000, much less hassle that way, and you have every part you need.

Those guys are right, you wont need a different computer. My car is using an SV90 computer (for those playing at home, no statesman comes from the factory as a manual) and its running my car with a 6 speed fine.

So what you're proposing is to go to the trouble of replacing the entire engine loom(Very major job) and ECU with what is essentially an identical item for the sake of avoiding having to terminate two wires. Hardly plug and play!
