Hey guys,
I have started to notice a noise coming from my engine. I originally thought the noise came from the rear of the engine, where the flywheel and torque converter join, but now Im thinking it could be reverberating through from the front of the engine. Maybe my Harmonic balancer?
What I found was that my Harmonic Balancer has some movement in it but Im not sure if this particular movement means its stuffed or not. What Ive done is labelled a attached picture of the engine where Ive found the movement to be to hopefully help explain myself better. The movement is approximately 2-3mm by hand.
Any help would really be appreciated
Does it wobble while it is running? Remove the belt and start it up, if the noise is still there then it is most likely the harmonic balancer.
Looks like you are up for a new balancer then. And it's a mongrel to get off on the VN-VR too.
vn it will come off without a puller vp onwards need to be pulled off with a puller and the bolt in the centre is tight as

Im up for a balancer too. I have a new balancer and puller ready to go, and just borrowed a breaker bar from a mate which should sit nicely inside a 1m metal pole. Not sure how it will turn out though. Iv wrapped the serpentine belt around the balancer then looped it over the A/C pulley. Been told it works wonders but I cant see the A/C compressor liking it too much lol. Might give it a crack tomorrow. VN S2 btw.
i had a 6 foot pipe on a quality breaker bar and a giant screwdriver holding the teeth on the ring gear and the breaker bar broke before getting the bolt undone they are tight.

Lol yeah they are tight. I was using the starter motor and an old ratchet with a bit of pipe. Shattered the ratchet mechanism before it cracked the nut but I was pretty much expecting it to destroy it. Was hoping to crack the nut in the process though.
A quality rattle gun is easy-mode for getting it off. Don't even need to do anything to stop the engine from turning if it's an auto.
yes you do need to stop the engine turning if its auto

I have always used a breaker bar with a bit of pipe over it and rested it on the chassis rail. Pull the plug from the DFI unit and hit the starter, cracks the bolt every time.
Not if you have a rattle gun because of the fast hammering effect. Iv seen people undo them on bare engines that are sitting on stands with next to no effort lol. *wants rattle gun*
I MIGHT try this if all fails, but it just sounds dangerous.
It's not dangerous at all. Make sure the breaker bar and pipe are on the passenger side chassis rail with as little slack as possible and turn the key so it just kicks.
Ah well got it undone using breaker bar and pole! Serpentine belt trick to hold it while you crack it works wonders. Diddnt take much effort either. Maybe 3 or 4 pushes on the pole and bingo. Now I just need to go to the hardware and get the right bolts to pull it off (puller kit doesnt have any small enough). 1/4" UNF Ive been told.
Sorry for the hijack. To the OP, I hope yours is just as easy!
