My brother went out to the road today and found a huge pool of petrol under his car. I jacked it up and found that some kents had stolen the fuel pump last night. They did pretty well to do this undetected, in darkness, with half a tank of petrol billowing out (it's the internal pump). A passing motorist throwing a cig butt out the window would have put the whole car up in flames. It's weird because the amount of petrol that they could have caught would have been worth more than a second hand pump.
So anything I need to know or be cautious of when putting a new pump in it? Found four bolts on the road, I can see where they go but I also found a clip and don't know where that's supposed to go. I just use a paper gasket yeah?
Unfortunately, yes these things do happen. (I've heard of cat converters in the past - mainly 4x4's)
They probably took the whole sender unit along with the pump (the long arm with the float) The gasket is a cork type.
your not serious, this is a joke isnt it?
I'm completely serious. Almost couldn't believe it, it's not even a bad part of town and it would have almost been easier for them to take the whole car. So the sender unit is attached to the fuel pump? I don't know how it all works. They cut the whole wiring loom where it comes out of the boot above the diff.
yeah, the fuel pump is attached to the end of the sender, like the pic in the ebay ad VL COMMODORE INTERNAL FUEL PUMP (VL CALAIS,VL TURBO) - eBay, Other Car Parts, Accessories, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 14-Apr-09 13:05:46 AEST)
you'll probably need to go to the wreckers to get all the bits and pieces
bahahahahha I shouldn't laugh but man they did well you got to admit that!
hahaha wavez, nice sig
Stolen fuel pump is one I haven't heard of before. Unlucky!!
vn6pwr, cat theft probably more common on 4wds because they are the only ones you can get far enough under without jacking up

Wow, that's so harsh. It's a pain in the arse to get under those things and remove the fuel pumps. Good 15min job, 20min if they were rushing and dropping their tools, which I bet they would havehaha
They would've been covered in petrol. There's no tidy way to remove those things without getting fuel EVERYWHERE, unless they waited 30min for the stuff to slowly drain into buckets. Hopefully they at least poured it back into their own car, instead of just wasting it.
You'll have to get the tail end of a fuel pump wiring loom from a wrecker, and patch it into your own loom since they cut everything. Get the fuel pump sender/bracket/everything but the pump itself from a wrecker, then buy a brand new pump. With any luck the pump they stole will crap itself. They tend to at this age.
You just got me worried about mine too, and I tried to get under there... but I can't physically get between the ground and my fuel tankYou should invest in an 80l fuel tank so it doesn't happen again ^_^

It took me about one half hours to change the fuel pump ,mainly because I had a full tank at the time
but to be able to pinch one! I though it would near be impossible without getting caught they must have been fast ,these guys need a job in a pit crew
What a pain in the arse! I would struggle with the motivation to do that for my own car, let alone stealing someone elses....I came out to my old car once (an old Mazda 626) only to find that someone had siphoned the petty & stolen my battery. Only problem was they had cut all the wires running to it to take it out.....Funny thing is they didn't bother opening the actual car and taking the deck. Bloody muppets!! It sh!ts me that people do this kind of crap to people. Like everyone doesn't have enough things to deal with without crap like this. Good luck with the install mate
Hate reading storys like this.
I just got a new VN calais and i have no choice but to park it at the front of my house, mind you i live in a pretty bad neighbour hood and have been broken into twice.
I know you would of lost your car, but they would have definetly learnt a lesson if they'd crossed the wires when cutting them whilst sitting in a puddle of fuel!!!!
Lol. I better be careful putting the wiring loom back together.
If you haven't fixed it yet, the clip will probably be from the rubber hose INSIDE the fuel tank, which is clipped to the pump. You will need to fish around for the hose and pull it out as far as possible, (don't try to pull it right out), clip the pump back onto it, then carefully insert the lot back into the tank. Take care not to bend or damage the float arm.
I did this job with the tank out and it was a mongrel. Leaving the tank in the car just makes it worse as the rear axle tends to restrict your working space.
Mate, thats some bad luck. I replaced one of those at home on my back under the car and it was a massive pain in the butt. I can't believe anyone would go to that effort over a part that costs $80 new. All that crawling in and out, working in the dark, getting covered in petty.. all I can say is LOL!
All jokes aside, it goes to show how low some people really are. I hope they didn't do any major damage.
Man that sucks B**t***s!!!! I've got a couple of plugs spare here from building my Production Saloon and a spares car. You can have them for postage cost ( i'm over the ditch mate, shouldn't be over a fiver maybe less). There's two plugs to the tank, do you need both?
PM me if you want and i'll work out exactly how much with your addy.
These guys need to be Rogered raw with a hedgehog on a stick ! ! !

someone tried stealing my supra... till they found out it had no motor....
lol sounds funny, like some kid up the street was fixing his car at 2am and goes,... damn wreckers isnt open, I KNOW... ill just jack that car up (probbly not even needed) and steal the pump.
i removed my girlfriends tail shaft (1 peice) without jacking her ford (EB) and even replaced the extension housing seal and tapped the new one in... its doable :P
a vn v6 fuel pump cant be worth more than $15-20 lol...
Haha nice, no motor..
My brother's VN is lowered quite a bit so they probably jacked it. I used to change the oil on my VN without jacking it up before I lowered it.
