    Default Changing Back a gear in an auto transmission...

    Hi
    I have an 89 VN auto six and was just wondering can i use the tranny when sllowing down (like a manual) or will it damage it.

    LOLOMGWTFWUTBBQ! yes you can use it to slow down. And you will find that some people have done it every single time they drive their car and they have never had a problems. Others will tell you their mechanic said it roots your gearbox. Use the search function and there are plenty of threads on this.

    yes it will. dont care what anyone says, autos arnt designed to do this. slapping it into 1st at 60km isnt going to do it any favours.

    Having had a gearbox rebuilder pull 2 gearboxes apart infront of me that have blown from people downshifting... I'd say don't.

    clearly dont smash it down into 1st doing 60 or 80 but if you are using the gears to slow down to aviod cooking your breaks its not going to harm it. Just dont be violent with it

    90% of rooted transmissions are from overheating it.. so maybe if you downshift it a lot then get a trans cooler?

    ive never had a problem with doing it...
    Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!

    and cracker slamming it into 1st at 60/80kph wasnt what he was asking, he was asking was it ok to use it to slow down not compression lockup... although the latter is also fun
