Hey guys was just woundering how one goes about changing a harmonic balencer on a VN v6 series1.![]()
Cheers
Commodores where do you want to go today
You need to undo the bolt through the centre which can be a tad tight!! But you will most certainly need a harmonic balancer puller. It screws into the holes infront of the balancer and is the only proper way to remove one.
BAH u dont need no puller
if you have a rattle gun (not a battery one) then crack the nut with that
otherwise you need to drop the torque converter cover plate (auto) or the flywheel cover plate (manual) and get a strong bar (jimmy bar works ok) to stop the flywheel from turning then you can crack the nut
now the nuts off take the balancer off... some models slide freely off no worries others do require a puller however... since you are replacing the sucker you can get two crowbars behind the bish and lever it off rather than buying a puller with parts that get lost easily lol
rattle gun make life alot ezier considering how hard that sucker is to crack by hand (if you do do it by hand use a stong metal bar over your breaker bar to crack it)
Rattle gun off the nut... that will save you lots of time!
You can pry it off with the crowbars, but id be a bit worried about damaging the timing cover behind it. Best way is to spend $10 - $15 on a harmonic balancer puller. You then just line up the puller and screw in 3 bolts, then turn the centre worm until it pops off.
exactly ..
confuscious say, dont use a jackhammer when a chisel will do .. ^_^
never late in a 3 0 .. uhhh ... intercooled turbo
yes i drive an mx6 turbo ... its probably quicker than yours.
cheers guys il give it a wack on saturday, thanks for all the info sounds easy enough, and i think my dad has a puller to help it off.
cheers again.![]()

Do you all beat the hell out of your motors when you work on them?![]()
There are two types of pulleys on the VN S1, and they are simple to check.
Either way, you need to get the bolt undone and a rattle gun would seem the quickest and easiest option. Although I managed to undo mine by giving a spanner a few hard sharp hits with a hammer to crack it.
If your balancer has the bolt holes for the puller, then use a puller, as it is a tapered fit and designed to be puled off using the right tool i.e. a puller.
If it doesn't have the puller holes then it is the straight shaft type and should almost just slide off. If not, some gentle but firm work with a couple of 15" screwdrivers should work it off.
By all means get stuck into it with bars etc, but be prepared to live with any damage that results. The right way, first time may save you lots of grief.![]()
