Thought it was about time i started a thread on the old girl. It started out as a TradeMe bargain. No rego or wof, dropped out of the system, 368***km's on the clock and running on LPG. Sold the LPG setup for $540 and a few other bits and pieces (still flogging stuff off occasionally as i trip over it ) and made my money back. Stripped it out, bought a top notch pipe bender and mig and built my first cage - studied the rulebook and asked a lot of questions and learned a few tricks e.g making tabs to tie the cage in with the body is NOT allowed, however if the pipework is touching the body you CAN weld it so i took my time and the main hoop is in contact with the 'B' pillars in a coupla spots same with the 'A' pillar pipes. 'bulkheads must be sealed' (fire safety) the back bars into the boot go through the rear bulkhead real tight and are 'sealed' by welding.
Got it done in three months of spare time and racing for the third meeting of last season
pics later
A couple of photos as promisedfirst is what i started witha couple of the 'custom interior' one of the virgin that hadn't seen the track yet - man i wish the rear quarters were that smooth still
and last but not least is my car in the pits between the 14G VK (in VH shell) that i swung spanners on and shared the drive of the previous season and the 43G VL that started it all. Two mates went halves in the VL and roped me in to working on it for them.
good work man a pipe bender would be real handy aye good lookn racer.... have fun!!!
shhh now PUPPET
about time you posted it up man bet the 1/4 panels look shit compared to back then

Third meeting for 34G, 30/12/08 first race of the night and had a hell of a battle for 2-4 with an older prelude in front of me and a skyline breathing down my neck, no mirror (optional) in my car but those rb25de motors make a distinctive bark when they come on song and i could hear it clear as behind me through the turns, he got me on the inside on boxing day so i kept on the low (slower ) line as much as i could to keep the door shut then with 2 laps to go a door opened and i got cleanly past the prelude in front. crossed the line F***in stoked at a solid second then spotted the car that was out in front beached on the infeild, as i was processing this a marshall yelled at me to go grab the checkered flag, some took the piss it was a win by default (which it was ) but a win regardless, and the only one for a RWD all season in class.
And with stock tired 3800 and a bloody auto in second, welded spiders etc
Ahh yup that they do mate, i'm not a panelbeaters arsehole and i DO NOT use filler at all, no point cos it'll only fall out with the 'rubbing' that goes on not to mention me 'grazing' the wall pushing too hard. besides anything that weighs anything and isn't necessary gets chucked, its got less bog in it now than before
footnote: VN rear bumpers are crap, first time i tapped the wall coming out of turn2 the whole thing just exploded all over the track behind mecaused mayhem for others haha

Well spotted man, i got a manual motor/box for it off TradeMe before the cage was finished and i figured it would be a real prick to change over pedal boxes with the hip plate in and the doors welded shut (was right, took the booster out a few days ago) so i put it in ahead of conversion time. its the manual pedal box with an auto brake pedal swapped into it, two tweaks on clutch pedal sorted out a wee interference issue and works a treat, makes it easy to stay on the loud pedal and give the brakes a quick stab with me left boot as i turn into the corners![]()
Went to the clubrooms with my fellow Commodore driving Production Saloon mates on wednesday night to sign up for this seasons license and club membershipI need to get the car greensheeted next weekend to be able to run in the first practice the following saturday night so its all become very real NOW. Got hold of my rings bearings and gaskets plus the loan of a couple of hones after work today so i'm into it.
I have started a thread in the how to's on the engine so i will be posting in there with pics once it comes up and i find time as i plod along. Its gonna be a busy weekend. Ahh who needs sleep![]()

A wee something i prepared earlier, i'll finish facing the seats and valves once the short block is together and compression heights are measured, i have had .035" taken off the block. When i was dummying up the block before starting any machining i measured the pistons between .042" - .045" below deck.
After stripping my manual motor and finding a big lip at the top of the bores and flogged out cam bearings i grabbed a spares motor that donated the heads ( got given it cos it had 'dropped a lifter' and been replaced with a runner) and stripped that, mint bores and serviceable cam bearings. Cleaned thoroughly and found it to be one very daggy casting. I was horrified at the amount of casting flash in the crankcase/cam tunnel area, some of it broke away with my fingers so a long session with the die grinder cleaning it up. Small wonder these things have a reputation for suddenly falling over bigends.
Spent last night giving it a hone and cleaning-cleaning-cleaning, mind numbingly boring but the price paid for being a fussy bugger.
Just noticed third photo is of bores after a quick lick with the coarse hone, the other photos came up crap

Ha, a four cyl rear bar might be better. I run 3 inches of stagger on the rear tyres ( lr circumference 3 inches less than rr ) so i can drive thru the corners without heading for the wall plus having the arse lean over means the lr still has some traction rather than lifting it, might disconnect the rear bar for a test yet
