Well I have taken a deposit for the turbo kit on the Calais so I have removed the kit in preparation for its new owner. It was time to get a new set of wheels to start another project. I looked for a bit and found an original VP Calais. I picked her up last week for a decent price. It is totally stock except for a Pioneer head deck and cat back exhaust. She has done 275,000kms and drives real nice I must say. She has nice cold air cond and all electrics work for now. The car is pretty clean and I must say is a pleasure to drive. It is ridiculously slow though which I cant stand.
I have wanted to make up a single turbo kit to suit VN-VR for quite some time so this will be beginning next week. I will be using a Garrett GT3582R with internal wastegate and I will be selling them as a full bolt on kit once it is developed and tested thoroughly. Pics will be added as progress takes place.

Can't wait to see the progress on this one Shane. It looks quite neat.
hey mate im looking at putting a turbo on a vp calais too can u keep me up to date with what your doing it would be greatly appriciated

No worries mate, stay tuned here for progress. I have done a bit so far including some work on the manifold and intercooler. I have looked at how many other kits are done and I havent seen one which retains the air cond. Every other kit you have to remove the condensor from the block and all the hoses. I dont want to do this and the way I am doing it you will keep the air cond which is a damn good thing. It is a bit tricky, but I can do it. Here is a few simple pics so far. I will put some pics up later this week or next week showing the manifold and turbo position.

what size cooler is that mate?
do u have a photo of it with the front bar back on did u have to cut much?
Some beter photos of the whole front and how u mounted the cooler with bar of and on would help me heaps thanks mate![]()
I havent done much on this project lately but today I made up the manifold. Here is a pic of the turbo sitting on the manifold. Next I will do the crossover pipe and after that the dump pipe and a few other small things. Should be ready in a month or so being realistic. The turbo is a Garrett GT3582R from a XR6 turbo. I will get some decent quality pics with my SLR soon as the phone cam is ****

I took some decent pics of the manifold yesterday. I have made up the crossover pipe and dummied up the dump pipe also. Getting there, still a few things to do but most of the hard work is done

How are you going to tune this Shane? Do you have the program and equipment to tune the standard ECU or are you gunna run an aftermarket ECU? It's looking good by the way.
Thanks NickI have priced up Kalmaker software as I did want to tune it myself. After finding out the price I cant justify it. It has limited use for only a small model range. Kalmaker has dozens of different tuning packages needed to cover all models so there is no point in me getting it. I will prob take it to Leon to get tuned

hey dude,
nice ride and your a keen man geting the turbo done so quick,
but comming from the world of twin turbo 1uz's and what not, but whats the point of having the turbo run on only one side of the motor? wouldnt it be better to run 2 small turbos and join the pipes before the intercooler?
or is the exhaust gasses from only one side of the motor enought to do the job?
im not knocking, im just curious![]()

He will make a crossover pipe which will join the 2 banks together, if you look at his pic of the manifold you will see a flange that is where the crossover pipe will bolt to.
Projects coming along nicely keep us up to date. There are a few people on here that can make you a tune that will go alright, up untill 10psi.

ah hes going behind the engine!i thought that was for a wastegate, good idea i must say, i dont know why but i never liked twin head motors having th exhaust pipe run around the front of the motor
either way im envious, shes a sweet ride dude

Imo you should of used a bigger diameter pipe for the crossover, it might be a bit restrictive.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Single turbo is just more cost effective as you dont have the expense of 2 turbos. Twins would be a good way to go but the cost factor must be considered. The crossover pipe is the same size as my LS1 turbo kits. There wont be any restriction as my old VY SV8 made over 700rwhp with the same crossover pipe size. I would be stoked if this thing made 300rwhp lol
Not too much more to go on this project. I just have to make up the oil drain tube and a few other small things. The oil and water feeds are all done and the dump pipe is finished. Just got to get around to making an exhaust for it now out of 3 inch tube and a few mandrel bends. Shouldnt be too long before I can start it

Just a couple more pics showing the manifold and plug clearance with dump pipe on etc. It is easy to change the plugs with the dump pipe on still.

Thanks mate. I priced up Kalmaker software myself as I do LS1 tuning but I cant justify the price for a once off tune. I will prob end up seeing Leon from Awesome Automotive here in Adel as he has lots of experience with these sorts of set ups. I will run as much boost as I can hopefully about 14-15psi and see what goes bang lol
Well I finished off the job last night and this morning and started her up today. After a final check and new fluids she fired into life first crank. No leaks, no rattles, no clearance issues, nothing. I idled her for about 15mins with no issues. Even ran the air cond for most of the time. Everything was spot on. I went and gave her a wash as it was covered in dust.
I bought a brand new Garrett GT3582R this week so now all that is left is to install some injectors, a Walbro fuel pump and off to get a tune in her. I can only idle the car and possibly do a bit of gentle off boost driving but I am so tempted to go for a boost in itEverything has come up very nicely. I still have to give the engine bay a damn good wash/de grease and clean up some cables etc. The bumper has to stay off for now as it has a broken bracket so I have to get another one I think. Here are a few pics.
Being that I am a closet Ford fan, here is an awesome pic of the turbo and some other pics of the car:

That is a very nice job mate got pics of the manifolds out and how you joined the 2?
there are alternatives to kalmaker for realtime tuning goto delcohacking.net vl400 has his 1 2 and 3 bar realtime gear fully operational massive tables for spark and fuel free bin files and xdf's and the hardware is cheap as chips
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
hey mate, thats a very nice seup you have there, I would be very interested in buying one of your manifolds if you start producing them, or if you would do a one of build. Kepp up the good work.
