No, silly Driver's side was MUCH heavier. At the front. The back showed a small discrepancy in favour of the spare tyre side.

Incidentally, I would have thrown the battery on the RHS regardless of the weight readout If I placed the battery on the LHS, this would have interfered with my ability to carry a spare on long distance drives. I tried every conceivable space in the boot, and the RHS turned out to be the most convenient - which was nice, given that's where I wanted it

Oh, it's all finished now ^_^ Going for a test drive.

    ALSO FIXED:

Exhaust bumping against chassis: solution was to bolt a length of radiator hose above it, to cushion the knocks

Oil pressure light coming on: solution was to fit a new oil pressure switch, and a new oil filter just in case

    Interior: finally completely assembled

Hmm, would that work at the y pipe or get too hot? My Pacemaker y pipe is hard up against the rail on the driver's side. New engine mounts ftl..

Also, found a handy way to drop a little weight from the driver's side.. was talking to our auto trimmer at work regarding lightweight bucket seats and he mentioned something interesting to me. A second passenger seat can be adapted to fit the driver's side, removing the weighty height adjustment assembly. I'm not sure whether the height adjust can be removed from a driver's seat, negating the need for a second passenger seat, but it's a handy trick that might be worth looking into nonetheless! If in doubt, compare passenger's and driver's seats for weight next time you have them out. I have it on good authority that the passenger is quite a bit lighter

What a night... just as I get everything else fixed, she dumps 5 litres of oil via two hairline fractures in the oil pump.

Props to HoZy for driving out and sacrificing an RACV tow for me

Aw man, Burson want $260 for a standard. Looks like I'll be grabbing your JP High Volume for that special price, Rory

If anyone happens to read this (Tim, Jason etc) do you know if high volume pumps create issues with a standard sump? eg drying out the sump too quickly and flooding the rockers.

    Cheers

Oh, and while I'm at it - anyone have any tips for installing and priming one of these?

afaik, smear the gears and the whole cavity with vaseline and then flood the pump with oil via the pressure switch.

Is the car then save to turn on, and leave idling 'till pressure builds up?

Also, how far do oil pressure switches screw in? I'm presuming they don't have to go in ALL the way

They can yes, If you are doing epic burnouts and such the rocker cover can be full of oil with nothing left in the sump. Usually standard pumps are the pump of choice, how much do Holden want for them?. Someone might be able to scam you one for trade price?

If we had standards in stock morton would be getting one all we had in stock are 4 high volumes We could get a standard one but as morton needs one asap its not going to happen

I dont think high volume will give too many issues on a stanard v8 as said above doing big burnouts and high rpm all the time will flood the top end pretty quick but on a public roads and during normal driving i doubt it'll be an issue

If you can Morton, try to stick with a standard pump. High volume pumps really aren't worth it. I have a good second hand one here if that helps you out at all??

Before fitting it, pull the pump cover off and fill the gears with vasaline and that will be fine. Once its full of vas no need to prime the pump with oil, it will pick up oil pressure instantly.

It appears that part of the cracked pump involved a cracked sleeve on the drive gear. The sleeve is now snapped off nicely inside my block

Any bright ideas for a bloke who doesn't have a slide hammer?

Tim, I needed the car fixed today and the high volume was $150, which was a damn good price.

If I run into issues with it, I may still take you up on that second hand pump I would have rather'd a standard one myself, but I don't have $260 to pay for one

But for now - the sleeve is snapped off! GRRR!

okay, had a feel in there with a pick - there's not even room to get a slide hammer behind the sleeve.

There's about 2mm of sleeve protruding from the block, not enough to get purchase on with multigrips, and the alloy is too soft to really get purchase on.

And I don't have any bolts big enough to thread into the sleeve to pull it out... *sigh*

    Any bright ideas?

    >_>

At least starting on Monday I have a job at Burson Auto Spares, so parts will be cheap

Sucks to hear man, when you put the new pump on disconnect the spark plug leads to build up oil pressure too ^_^

BTW which Bursons are you working at? Might see you if you do deliveries to workshops haha

    I'm working down in Malvern

I already have the spark plugs out, ready to crank her over and fill the pump.

I'll see how I go with the new job, and whether I'm good to public it in every day. I'm thinking that will be fine. If so, I'll pull the stato off the road for a few months and get stuck right in there.

    Pull the engine out
    CLEAN IT
High volume sump (it can't hurt, right? I want to clean the pickup too.)
Possibly throw a cam in there

Glad to hear about the job morton if you want you can give the pump back to me with the receipt and i can exchange it for a standard one considering the car isnt going to need it soon yoou might also get a bit of a refund ill talk to work on monday they should be fine with swapping it.
I'm guessing from what your saying is it the drive gear inside the timing cover that is the problem correct and the little shaft that comes off it for the the oil pump. Theyre a pain you could fix it without removing the engine but it would be much easier out . If i remember correctly theres a split pin that goes throught gear on the timing cover end without removing the gear the shaft wont likely come out. Is that what the deal is?

Anyway i'll message you on monday and let you know whats happening might be a day later before we get a standard pump in anyway

I think I may just do that exchange, it's not a bad idea The high volume pump can only do bad things.

I really appreciate you getting it to me so quickly though, it would have been awesome if I could've fitted it on the same day

Let me know what happens, and I'll see if I can get someone to swap the pumps for me, as I don't have transport
