Damn fuel tank is leaking... Dropped about 1/2 tank of fuel on new years day, trying to drive it home from a friends place. I think the external pump has had it, or I've bashed a hole in the damn tank... Not happy.
Cars too bloody low for a good look at whats wrong, will try to get under it over the weekend.
Might be time for a Walbro pump....
Found the problem...
After a evening of trying to get a jack under the car - gutter/brick combo ftw, turns out the internal fuel pump (low pressure) is not sealing correctly to the outside of the tank....
Will have to try and fix it when there is some daylight, petrol is pissing out when the engine is running.
Hopefully it's just a dud seal ....
Leaking fuel problem now fixed
Turned out to be a completely stuffed high pressure fuel pump.
Pump replaced and hopefully no more problems for awhile...
Installed a new set of power mirrors off Ebay today, very happy with them so far, so good to get the old shitty blue VP ones (donation from a mate) So good to be able to move the mirror on the passenger side, was getting sick of asking the missus to move it for me...
Mirrors fit pretty good for an aftermarket part... was pretty impressed. Only stuffed up with installing them once, when I put down the window, and it unplugged the cable for me... whoops.
Finally got around to installing the little lip type spoiler that the statesman/caprice's have. Yes it's blue.
Starting to get all the exterior parts sorted for the VN. Has anyone tried to install the SV5000 fiberglass wheel arch flares??
Mine look around 2" too long... They don't fit well at all. Is this the case with more fiberglass replica's???
Also, if anyone knows the answer to these few questions, please let me know.
1) Can you use a Alloy VN V8 radiator in a V6 series 2 VN?
2) To replace the air con condenser, do you have to de - gas the air con system?
3) Duel radiator fans - Can you use the Ford EL/EF type or only the AU type??
Keen to stop the car from running hot, its pissing me off lately..
Also that's my new FG ute next to VN.
![]()
1) yes - the top hose inlet is a little larger, but the standard hose will squeeze on with some persuasion - running one in my VN V6
2) yes - it's all part of the high-pressure system
3) you can use both, but the AU type are a much better fit, and require far less modification.

You sir, are a legend!!!
Thank you very much. Going to start looking for a alloy v8 radiator and some twin fans for the VN!
There should no overheating anymore!!
Will do a write up of the install for other people to follow!!!
Very nice car mate keep up the good work
Thanks mate^
Have now fitted a genuine MOMO VN Group A style steering wheel. Soooo much better than any other aftermarket of factory wheel for the VN.
Car is now rolling on some 19" VY senator sigs (copies) in shadow chrome. Didn't think I would like it as much - but its starting to grow on me!
19" wheels on a VN are HUGE!!!
Have tracked down an Alloy VN V8 radiator with a 52mm core and a brand new set of AU twin radiator fans.
Also have purchased some LED lights (white) for the boot, if I'm not too lazy after work today i may install them.
Will put some pictures up soon... (laziness non withstanding)
Some updates on this beast ( as beastly as a VN v6 gets anyway)
LED lights mounted in boot, can't get a proper photo, looks great at night, can see what is in my boot, and I see that its dirty...
So, newer boot carpet installed from a VP Calais was installed, just need to get the large bottom part. The moulded VP carpet is miles better than any VN series carpet. Will get a pic when I can.
New - ish CD player has been installed, Alpine CDA - 117E with iPod USB and Handsfree bluetooth. iPod cable is run to centre console.
And cos I found the camera, some pics of how the car is now, decent quality and not from an iPhone. Some artistic ones thrown in for good measure.
Enjoy!
So, because I had some spare time today, I checked out the damage to the front brakes after a trip away to Lorne with the missus. I cooked the brakes on the downward hill just outside the Erskine waterfalls. For those who have drivin that road, its a steep slope with signs that enforce a 20km/h speed limit. Of course I was a little fast down the hill, cos standard VN brakes with 19'' rims dont do jack shit to stop a car. It turns out I have stuffed the BRAND NEW PADS AND ROTORS!!!!
So, now a brake upgrade is in order, have been in contact with a few people today. Looking at a HSV VN era brake upgrade. Have purchased a 1" master and booster already and looking for a 330mm or 343mm brake kit. Not sure if i'm going to upgrade the rear brakes to 315mm because at this stage, it seems pointless.
Also really need to replace the radiator because today the car did not like the heat. Looking at putting twin AU fans onto a VS V8 alloy radiator and wiring one fan to the ecu and one fan to a switch inside the car so I can turn it on when needed (solves the problem of altenator drain when powering two fans)
hopefully will have some big updates soon!!
hey mate have you looked into the getting a vt twin piston front brake upgrade. i got them on mine and put them on the gf,s vp executive to. cost us $850 plus postage off ebay. people are also doing ve style upgrade to now might be worth looking at.
After some research, I have purchased a brake upgrade kit for the VN. It is a HSV spec upgrade with 343mm rotors and VE twin piston calipers.
These things are MASSIVE when compaired to the standard crappy brakes on a VN. Rotors are electro plated gold, so hopefully they won't rust and look crappy. Not sure if i'm going to paint them so they stand out, or leave them silver and go less "boy racer". Hopefully it will get me stopping quite well. Also have purchased a VN V8 1" master and booster.
If I get more stupid with my money, I may look into a 315mm upgrade for the rear brakes. We will see though...
Have also got a set of VS GTS seats to install as well, they have been retrimmed with VT HSV cloth, so soon they will be retrimmed in either leather or dark grey velour, depending on my budget at the time. Seats feel great to sit in, they seem more "grippy" around you, can't wait to install them.
Also thrown up some new pictures of the MOMO steering wheel and the new Alpine head unit.
Pulled apart my cluster the other day to resolder the pesky voltage regulator, so while it was in bits, I added a small HSV logo. Looks pretty good -looks just like the VN HSV spec clusters fitted back in the day.
Sorry for the some of the dark photos, the camera thinks it knows better about when to use the flash...

Just saw this, yes a brake upgrade on any VN to VS is a must, infact anything before a VT.
Got my kit off eBay too, payed $650 for a 343mm upgrade. Went with the VE upgrade though, because of the smaller pistons in the caliper, didn't want the hassle of fitting a VT master and booster.
VN has gone to have the new front brakes fitted today, I'm sooo busy with work and haven't had the time to even look at the VN. So brakes will be fitted by my mechanic.
Have also been told by my dad that I can no longer store parts/bits for the VN in his shed![]()
So to make him happy I'm going to have to sell some bits off....
Will post up picks of upgrade when it's done and also how it feels compared to standard brakes.
Have now had the front brakes installed, master and booster were not installed as the master cylinder was leaking
Will have to track down another one. Does anyone know if Bursons stock them??
New brakes work great, only complaint is that the left side has a noise while driving and sometimes braking.
I'm hoping a new and better set of brake pads will fix this, as the ones that came with the kit were pretty cheap and nasty.
If that doesn't work, then might get the rotors machined, just to make sure.
In other problems, the damn long range tank is still pissing me off. I cannot run the tank under half full as the the external pumps hums like an enormous bee.
Can I fit a single pump like a Walbro GSS 342 inside the tank with a VN V8 sender with a VN long range tank?
Or will I need a sender from a VR V8 tank and fit the relevant top hoses?
Will I have the same problem with the Walbro as I have heard they can be quite loud...
The main problem I have is there is a hose that Holden no longer stock and is not available as an aftermarket one.
It's preventing me from having the length to mount the external pump sideways instead of vertical. It also has like two different sizes on it!!!
Arrraaahhhh!!!! Over it some times!!
If anyone knows how to fix these problems let me know!!!
I'M GOING TO KILL THIS CAR!!!!
Just got towed by the RACV, I'm over it, going to buy some thing else and start again!!'
Damn fuel system is stuffed, doesn't want to work, more bloody problems with this damn tank setup!!!
/end rant (till another day)
I am about to fit a drop tank and surge tank system in the boot of my car, hopefully i dont have to many issues. U'll get there mate its a car its suppose to piss you off haha
~ VN POWER ~ Click the scales
I hope your install goes a lot better than mine...
I actually was looking at your ride thread last night while waiting for a tow truck, your making me wanna turbo this thing
Best of luck to your car mate, hope it runs better than mine.
Small update:
SHE LIVES AGAIN!!!!!
nice vn man
I got the same spoiler, but unsure on installing it, how'd you with doing yours?
Did it the bogan way, lined up the centre with the boot lock, scratched the paint on the boot with the two bolts closest to the boot lock and drilled it out using a 6mm drill bit.
Once they where done, the ends where done using the same method. Only I had to get the step drill out to put a hole on the underside of the boot lid so I could do up the nyloc nut with a ratchet.
Then painted all surfaces with a touch up brush ( tiny little thing from repco)
So nothing would rust.
I don't recommend this method unless you have a spare boot lid to use if you stuff it up. I tried to measure it all out and got impatient... So did it this way and got it spot on. Was a little tight in one hole (that sounds dirty) but was able to pop/force it in by wiggling the spoiler while the other bolts where loose.
Best of luck to you, took me 25 mins to install while it was parked on the nature strip...
Paint it first before sicaflexing it to the boot lid tho, mines still gotta be painted. I just got sick of tripping over it while waiting to install it.
So cracked it and got the drill out after work one afternoon.
Let us know how your install goes!
Did some more work to this today, fixed the stuffed brake lights (again) with the small grinder piece on my Dremal, to get rid of the rust. Once that was done, installed new globes and used some conductive greese in the the socket and on the globes to hopefully prevent any rusting. Also repainted the tail lights alittle as they were starting to fade. Looks good with all 5 lights working again!
Also got the AU fans and radiator out and started to cut up the fans to make them fit. I've run into a problem, the transmission cooler on the radiator is way too close to the fans
So I'm thinking of either using different fans, or installing a transmission cooler and extending the factory cooling hoses into it. Then finding a way to block up the transmission cooler mounts on the radiator.
Also having no more drama's with the fuel tank anymore, I cracked it on Friday night and ripped the external pump out along with all the crap that connects to it and replaced the internal pump with a Walbro unit.
Should have done this from the start, when starting the car, I cannot hear the fuel pump at all! makes such a difference. Very happy now, I can run the tank under half full and have no annoying buzzing coming from under the car.
Hopefully my fuel tank problems are now sorted!
Have also sorted out the problems with the brakes, it was the clips on the the brake pads that were rubbing in the brake pad carrier (stupid bloody design)
Does anyone else hate the VE calipers as much as I do now?
Some pic's of yesterday's mess and of the AU fans. Installed some new RCA cables (Aerpro crystal series) so now I can have a sub again and some rear speakers! Also installed the Bluetooth unit for the speaker so now i can can have hands free calling through the stereo, not through a small speaker mounted under the dash! Will still use the cradle on the console though, Victoria has some pretty strict laws on that.
Next on the list is to upgrade the amp wiring from 4GA to 0GA.
Helps to have the Aerpro catalog at workCan order straight from them, and pay cost price
But every time I pick it up, I want some thing else....
Also put up a pic of my new favorite tool, the hackzall!!! love this thing, took about 10 mins to trim the AU fans to fit the radiator!

tried fitting my spoiler earlier today, has gone so well!
luckily i brought a spare boot the same color to fit it too!
