VR tranny leak from bell housing

I have a VR that is leaking tranny fluid badly from the torque converter / bell housing. If you put it in any gear with your foot on the brake and give it some revs it 'rains' fluid. I hope it is only the front oil seal on the front of the pump body. I have the box out and removed torque converter. The amount of fluid it was leaking i was expecting to see a split or break in seal but can see nothing. This does not mean it is not stuffed i know but while the box is out i want to be sure. Could the pressure regulator valve be suspect? Is there anything else i should look at while it's out. The transmission is otherwise running fine.

Is there any sign of a groove being worn in the sleeve on the rear of the torque converter, where it slides into the front housing? Could be a worn seal and/or worn sleeve on converter.

The pump housing seal is only paper I think and it can leak - it did on my son's rebuilt trans, so replace it anyway. While you're at it, replace the torque converter seal in the front extension anyway.

Virtually no groove is acceptable. When you combine a worn sleeve and a worn seal, your problems are magnified. You could try just replacing the seal but the chances are that the worn sleeve will still permit leaks and only wear the new seal out faster. Best option is to replace the converter and the seal. Might be worth talking to trans specialist for proper advice and show them the groove. They might have a good second hand converter you could buy if they think the groove is bad.

ok problem solved. The bush in the front of the pump has 'walked' out pushing the seal open. Also bush and t/converter sleeve badly worn. Thanks for your advice Calaber.

Hi Mate,just went through the same thing on my VR clubsport,converter seal was leaking,had to also replace the torque converter as it had a groove worn into it from the seal,and also put in a heavy duty pump bush,replaced 2nd and 4th bands,2 and 3 clutches seals etc ,took 100k or so for the trans to come right but now its as snappy as,goodluck with your trans

how much did the mechanic slog u for this? i might be due for something similiar
