looking for a mate, and came across this,
holden vr commodore 3.9s.mini spool, 10mnths reg - eBay, Passenger Vehicles, Cars, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 16-May-09 17:28:56 AEST)
but i heard off someone because of the extractors and other such stuff its illegal on p's?
any care to shed some light,
in vic if state rules are different,
technically yeh its illegal...
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
so no point in buying eh?
Yes it is illegal for ALL P-platers who went through the P1 one system. If you got your P's before 1st July 2008 (i.e. Your on green P's now) then it is not illegal.
But I give up on trying to explain to people the consequences of modifying your car on your P's, so if your one of the few who give a shit, search haha.
mini spools are illegal on any street driven car truck ect in oz from what i read sorry but its a nice looking car and at the right price would be fun fun fun
yeah, shame on stupid p rules,
having those mods is nothing really to worry about unless u get done by a prick of a cop who knows what he is looking for.
its getting a roadworthy for it that will be the problem...
nice car tho and good price
hmm, im still trying to convince my mate to buy it,
I'm not 100% about mini-spool legallities, but really unless you are using the car to drift, you will just put copious strain on the axels and wheels, you will also see premature tyre wear occuring as the spool forces the tires to spin directly together(effectively only one solid axle), unlike an LSD (limited slip differential) which allows a limited amount of free spin between the two wheels (plenty for normal driving, parking, etc..)
If you're on your "Green" P's then the only other issues will be:
- Engine Capacity/weight
Rule is: no more than 3.5L / Tonne
The V6 VR's engine capacity is not over the 3.5L /per Tonne rule
- Power/weight ratio
Rule is: no more than 125Kw / per Tonne.
i.e. Kerb Mass of a VR = 1.422 Tonnes
Therefore: Limit for VR Commodore = 125 * 1.422 = 177.75 Kw
So unless that car puts out more than 177.75 Kwatts then you're all good for legality.
The mods may effect your insurance though.
However if you're on "red" P's you've got lots more issues.
- pls note: i am NOT a lawyer, I am an Insurance Agent, so if you're deeply concerned, check with Vicroads and/or your local Cops
they brought in the new high powered vehicle laws before the red p's
its if you got your licence after 1st july 2007...
then its no turbos, superchargers, 8 or more cylinders and no mods at all that increase engine performance
if i only just got my ps no way would i be getting a car with a spool... thats just silly
Yeah I still cant find a clean answer to do with this illegal moficiation thingo. Every P plater in Qld runs a modified catback exhuast or cannon, yet I hear of no one being fined for it. I have a catback exhaust and a CAI, which technically is a mod as well. But honestly you could change the oil to something not recommended by the car owners manual and gain 1 KW off it and that would be illegal. All I can really tell is that you are no sposed to drive cars with more that 200KW at the flywheel, cars with more than 8 cylinders or car with super/turbochargers. I think the rules are in place to keep people under the 200Kws, so if you got a VS commodore thats 147Kw at the engine when its new, you probably lose at least 30Kw coz its like 13 years old (if not more) so what difference does having a CAI or an exhaust make? Next to nothing on Kw gain. But plently of people get high lift rockers and cams because you cant tell whether people have them or not, especially if your a general cop who knows next to nothing about cars. Unless they impound your car on suspicion and then get someone with mech knowledge to look at it. Thats my thoughts and clarification would be great. Also someone said you cant modify on your red Ps but you can on your Greens? There is no difference between P1 and P2 except you can carry more than one person under the age of 21 after 11pm at night.

hey mate, might wanna check if the guy sellin it is tellin you everything. ran a check on vicroads and it came up 15/01/2010 not february :P
Just looking at my P plate booklet here and it says, you can not drive a modified engine requiring approval under the transport operations regulation yadda yadda yadda. To me it sounds like it has to be a major mod for it to be undrivable hence a supercharger or turbocharger
the passenger restrictions doesnt bother me at the slightest, i hate having a car full of people, also having the passenger restrictions cancels you out for being the driver when you go to the city en such haha
anyways back on topic technically yes its illegal to have that car if your mate got his licence after july 2007 yadda yadda yadda lol

I wonder if this will change any restrictions. . .
that would be right 2 months before i go from red to green they change the system lol
when are they supposed to scrap these rules?
The Road Safety Traffic Management Act is enforced Australia wide by all law enforcement. If your on your 'P's and you modify a vehicle out of manufactures specifications you may attract attention..........The simple rule usually applies (I say usually because not all cops play the same game). If you drive like an idiot you will attract attention. If you have the right attitude 90% of the time the attitude test is applied and you drive away with a lecture !. If you don't, we'll you came across that cop that has no friends and would give his mother a ticket LOL. It's simple attitude. This is really important, don't argue, don't complain, don't be a clown.....it's the Highway Patrol you have to be concerned with not the local General Duties cops the majority of those blokes are to busy driving in between 'domestics. It's simple if you have a modified vehicle......drive correctly, don't be an idiot. If you manage and control your vehicle in a mature way the majority of the cops will simply admire your wheels and leave you alone. If your sideway around a corner one would suggest you'll be on the side of the road with the bonnet up and a red/yellow label affixed to your windscreen.
