I have got a major wine that is getting worse as time goes on.
I have got, a vs series 3 ute. v6. With a getrag manual.
Just wanting to know
What will be wrong, Bearings or what?
What would it cost to get repaired? a ball park figure?
I am thinking about getting the gears changed at the same time! Would this be cheaper? eg buy the gears from ebay,
Is it worth doing myself? ( i have got the repair manual. So thinking about it?)
How long will it take them?
Is there any places that you would recommend in Bayswater/Croydon direction of Victoria? (as i have got trade school this week in croydon!)
Thanks for your help in advance.

This section and thread may help you alot.
How to: Source your own diff gears and remove them yourself
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
Whine during acceleration only = gears
whine all the time = either your mrs or berings.
Unless you are experienced with meshing together it's a job best left to a professional.

Okay thanks for the reply's.
I will leave it to the pros.
But a rough price would be handy so i know I'm not getting ripped.
It is a constant wine, weather i am accelerating or just coasting, Louder when coasting as the engine noise is down.
Got a fairly loud exhaust and it is traveling through into the cabin. Scared it going to give up on me.
Thanks guys
Edit:
Its not just going to be low diff oil? but a simple chance?
you could drain and refill the diff oil and used an additive in it (stabiliser) (spelling)
and see how that goes, but if that doesnt do it then you'll have to get a new one a 2nd handy one put it.
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
I just called 2 places,
1 recommended me to find a second hand diff and fit that for $160
and the other was going to charge me $790 for bearings and fitting.
The crown gear etc are more.
So im not sure on what to do.
Think i will find a second hand diff and get it fitted for $160 and hope that it is in good condition.
Im going to do some research on if a Lsd will fit in!
yeah 2nd is the way to go. I bought my diff 2nd hand, with only 80,000kms on it, off a mate. then got it fitted. No more whine after that.
Ive looked at some on ebay (bearings etc..) and yeah they are expensive.
Lsd will fit.

I have been told by a family member to get brake plus to look at it, as i might be a wheel bearing related issue due to it constantly wining? What do you think?
i might also change the diff oil? (mainly look at the condition of the oil)
I had the same problem with my diff when I bought the car about two years ago, common fault with the diff I have been told by a few people.
Took it to a diff repair shop and paid the $700to get it fixed, no more whine.
Problem with buying second hand is you may be buying the same problem or one that is on it's way there.
Choice is yours, pay the $$$ now to fix it right or roll the dice and hopefully find a good second hand unit saving a load of money.![]()
I changed my oil last night and found a fair amount of metal filing, The oil was a dark black colour. There did seam to be the correct QTY.
I am still to find a decent repair out eastern Suburbs of Melbourne?
Any ideas?
Thanks
PM wagon wheel, Im pretty sure he went to a place around Braeside area about his diff (but i could be wrong)
I did check my wheel bearings first, but it was found alter that it was my diff that mae the whine.
Since you say you found alot of metal shavings when you drained it (the oil) Id say your diff is up shit creek.

Hey,
all sorted, a place in dandenong is doing a brand new LSD and 3.45 gearing for 1200 cash?
Thanks for all of your help.

Sounds like your problem is with the rear diff.. have heard of this happening alot.. happened on my auntys car and on my vs before i got it.. the only real solution im pretty sure is a new rear diff..
Try putting a couple of bananas in it. Good old trick.
my old man has a lil datsun 1200 ute that we ring its neck out fairly reguarly down at winton motor race way. and that got a marjor wine. so he took it to the diff man. and he said it wasnt the diff it the gear box. but my old man had to get the lsd rebuilt so it all came out. and he found something wrong with the crown pin or something. so he fixxed it and put it back on the track and it stoped. but we also ut baffels in the axels so the oil stayed in the 1 spot goin around corners. and now it fixxed and we still not sure wat the prob was. but ti was definly the diff. just thought i would let u no cuz i can
