Hey all, After putting my heads back in recently had a bit of trouble trying to put the bloodt oil dipstick back into the engine sump.. took me and a friend forver to try and feel around for the entry hole!..but now.. a few months on it doesnt look like the stick is the rite place because there never seems to be an oil smeer on the stick! so im thinking it's prob not in the hole at all! is there some trick to putting this thing back in? i really gotta know, cars getting bit old and would be good to be able to quickly check the oil lol
Its in an 3.8 ecotec motor btw
Cheers
Just had a look at mine and the only help I can give you is that it goes behind the first plug on pass side straight down...the rest is hidden by the A/C comp....I'd figure you'd need to get under to have a proper look with a mirror.
Good Luck
hmm a mirror..could be a good idea lol, thanks for ur help anywho..trial and error i guess
I know you probably wont read this BUT. I just tried checking my oil in my new motor and the dipstick tube was bent and i pulled a little bit to hard pulling the tube out. I have located the hole (next to the knock sensor) anyways it seems to go in but not the whole way. I figure this as the dipstick is very easy to pull out and also i checked it before and it was full and hasnt been started since. Can anyone help ???
Also off topic does it matter if you dont run knock sensors on ol mate ecotec ?
maybe they should've put fur around it?
nah, if you pull the cel globe out you won't notice a problem......... unless you change the tune to ignore the missing knock sensor it'll just go into lhm, if you tune it to run without the sensor you better have good ears and fast reflexes for when you get that shoddy batch of fuel.
If it doesn't move, force it. If it breaksit needed replacing anyway.
The dipstick tube should just push down into the hole until it seats.Make sure the o ring on the tube is ok so it doesnt leak. As mentioned, if you dont run a knock sensor, then the ECU will run in limp home mode ,which means the ECU will keep the ignition timing locked at the base angle of 10 degrees. The ECU uses the knock sensor readings to variate the ignition timing to suit fuel type, engine load, engine temp, ambient temp, etc etc, so it will run like crap without them.
well one of the clips in ####ed from when the engine blow a rod out the block and the other one i snapped. can the wire just be soldered directly to the knock sensors or have i fcked it. And i know that you seem very knowledgeable and all but i was under the impression without them it would be fine assuming your motor doesnt start knocking that is. should of fixed the loom when the motor was out grrr
What Brett says is 100% true - the car goes into limp home mode which means it runs and starts in 3rd gear, uses heaps of fuel and is so unpleasant to drive that you'll torch it.

Go to the wreckers and get good conections from a wreck. Cut old ones off solder new ones on. Problem solved.
