Hi, I'm looking at buyinig a V8 VS that the owner tells me is an ex-police car. I thought that the VIN contained BT1 for these cars? The cars an 8 with Auto , IRS, Airbags, Long range tank, ABS an SS interior and the owner tells me he put the Electric windows in himself. The VIN starts 6H8VSk19UTL******. How do I tell if this is really an ex cop car?
hey bud i may be wrong but mine says bt1 after the model number on the model plate closer to the manifold then the compliance plate
chris
As above - it will say on the compliance plate if BT1 - not the VIN.
My VX SS chaser has PCAR on the compliance plate.

and all so the dash is diffrent it has evry k marked not every 5 like a std car
Look at my plate

As said, should say BT1 on the compliance plate, and the speedo should be marked in 2km increments. Also there will be a little slot above the speedo inside the cluster where an extra light is so they can see the speedo at night with no lights on. They will usually have all the SS options, LSD, IRS, FE2 susp. 80L fuel tank, drivers airbag. Should also have sump protector plates. . If it's a V8 it should have full SS trim interior and calais style interior light with maplights. Also ex-copcars are always auto, unless converted after service.
Also, if ya give holden a call with the VIN, they should be able to tell ya if it was fitted with the police pack or not.
OK on the P/CAR on the plate, but I guess I am a bit out of line here, mine is a VX Chaser, not VS.
It has not been polished yet and you can still see the outlines of the decals on the roof and bonnet. The traction control buttons are missing from the console, slight difference in the under dash wiring harness. When you open the door there is a speedo calibration sticker there. The fire extinguisher is still in the boot.

later model cars, VT onwards are 9C1 not BT1
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
I don't want to seem negative.......but don't buy an ex police vehicle. They have been driven hard from cold start up, they have holes all over the dash from radio, cradles, warning devices, ICV...etc...etc. They have been rammed, smashed and driven hard. Look under the vehicle before you purchase one and have a look at how many scrape and dints are underneath the vehicle from mounting medians. I know because I drive one. There is no way in the world I would buy an ex chaser. If you want to have a vehicle which is a Police Pac....add the extras yourself. At least you will know your car hasn'nt had the @#$% thrashed out of it for the past 50,000 kilometres since new.
my VS has 9C1 stamped on the plate it has the big fuel tank IRS LSD 5L 5 speed sump protector map lights small incriment speedo and light for the speedo whilst the lights are off no holes in the dash but lots of extra wiring in the engine bay
people think that they go harder cause of the "cop chip" lmao
there just like company cars the driver doesnt give a shit about it cause its not even his/her car lol.
Maybe some people cannot afford a clean well looked after SS, HSV, 5 litre Calais etc etc. BT1's are cheap, and they have a V8 under the bonnet. And don't say "they should save up the extra and buy something nicer" because when you are itching to get a new car or a V8 etc, sometimes you will buy whatever is cheap and available, just to get yourself into V8 because you are excited.
Yes, BT1's have been hammered, stacked, rammed, have had quite a few crims parked their filthy asses on the back seats and have holes all through the interior. But if someone wants to buy one, they will.
Everyone told me i was silly for spending $12,000 on a bloody clean VS Senator with low km's, when i could have bought a VT or VX LS1 for that price. I bought mine because 5 litres are by far the best sounding engine besides the 308, they don't come up for sale that often in such clean condition with low country km's with full owners compendium and service history etc and i love VS HSV's, they look tough.
So maybe you can see why people buy them, because maybe they can't afford a cleaner or more expensive 5 litre. When you want a 5 litre and you don't want to spend a fair bit on one, BT1's are the best way to go. I wouldn't buy a BT1 V6 though. For the price you pay for a BT1 V6, you can buy a V6 that WASN'T a cop car in it's life.

Here is a build plate for a VS BT1
A VS Cop Car
White 05 V6 VZ Executive - Thrashed Ex Telstra car
and 3 Dangerous non ABS VN's
The BT1 model was supplied to many other departments - fire departments both state and federal, Customs, RAAF, Navy and Army Military Police, rural fire boards etc as well as state and federal police. I'd reckon that less than 1% of BT1's were "chasers". My BT1 has no sump guard, no LSD and is a V6. It was bought new by Dasfleet in Canberra who then lease them out to other commonwealth departments. Underneath is as clean as a whistle and there are no signs of the car being abused.
Any government department could order one and spec it up - maybe mine was leased to ASIO.![]()
Hi my vs Bt1 is a really clean example for an ex cop car as there are no holes in the dash and no scrapes undeneath.manual box shifted perfect and lsd still works like new.motor still went as hard as ever pushing out 150rkw with stock headers and 2.5in exhaust from cat backand cai and chip.Just finished putting in a come 355 stroker kit with new crow cam, lifters and psh rods,70mm throttle body and ported the manifold to suit.also put in bigger injectors and extractors and match ported the heads to suit.have not yet done a dyno run as i have only put 200km on the new engine so will let you no the figures once it has been tuned and run on the dyno
