    Default transmission mods vr commodore

    Hi all,
Have a stock standard 93 vr and want to do a few performance mods, one of the first things i was looking at was the transmission. After reading alot of posts on these forums i thought that a transgo stage 2 shiftkit would be the go. I found one on ebay but decided to ring a trans specialist first to get the price on the fit. He told me that fitting a shift kit to a vr was a waste of time because of the electronic trans, and told me short of driving around with the pwr button on there was not much to be done to improve shifts.
Does anyone agree/disagree with this? should i just get a rebuild by itself to improve shifts?
The trans seems to slip a bit when it drops down a gear at highway speeds or when revved hard, but generally not too bad. Has 260,000 on it.
    Cheers.

I did a bit of research into done up autos but eventually chose to go manual. Usually they get fully rebuilt with extra clutches, different servos, etc. One of the blokes I talked to said that it was best to rebuild the entire gearbox because the harder shifts destroy the sun shell (I'm pretty sure thats what he said can't remember exactly).

A half decent box and a trans cooler is well over $2k, so I decided to go manual, doing it myself and has cost me around $1k.

Because almost any trans shop does strengthened autos and they are pretty good even if they are pricey. If your in the brisbane area sureshift automatics on the north side have a very good reputation for the 4L60E.

cheers chris but by strengthening do you mean fitting a shift kit? I wanted to fit the shift kit because it is the cheaper option to the rebuild. Has anyone fitted stge 2 kit to 4L60e and had it for a decent length of time?

it doesnt matter if its electronic or not you can still add a shift kit to the internals of the trans too improve the shifts. i have one it mine and made it heaps better.

Might be worth it to get one shipped from a better auto shop in a larger city, a fully built auto isn't all that fancy anymore.

yeah well transgo sell a reprogramming kit for the 4l60e transmission, so I'm starting to think that these guy's don't know what they are talking about. Why would they make the kit if it wasn't worth being installed??? Looks like I may have to go to sydney to get it done, anyone know anybody good there?

if you are going to spend that sort of money on your trans to improve performance you would be better off doing a manual conversion.

hey mate i have a transco stage 2 shiftkit fitted to my vr v6 and its great, when you get it fitted they reccomend to fit corvette srevo piston also.

when you refure to strenghening the best is to fit

    Hardened input sharft
    Steel clucth pistons(replaces alloy ones)
High performance 1-2 and 3-4 clutch pack
High energy band (not the widest cause it sofens off your shift)
High tensile foward and orver run clutch plates

this is what i had fitted to mine, cost was 1400 for strengthening and shiftkit was about 180 from autobarn
    hope this helps
pm me if you want copy of my invoices to show your auto repairer
