Get it checked soon! - it's the warning light for the brakes and usually means that one circuit has a major leak or some other imbalance. This light looks like (!) with the ! inside a 0.

There is another similar one which means a bulb failure - it's similar to the one above but has radial arms from it and a small square on top.

So if it's the former get it checked soon.
    Good Luck.

I was gonna say! Its brakes, not the handbrake lol. As hako said, its caused by a pressure imbalance between the front and rear circuit. So either a major fluid leak or one of the pistons within the master cylinder has failed.

you may leave your handbrake a lil on but wont affect the car at all but the light will still be on. and normally there is a sound to notify you...well my car does

The warning light that 32pseye describes is not the handbrake light. The handbrake light is (P). His warning light is (!) which is the "brake failure" light. This can mean that he/she currently has unsafe brakes and may soon have "no" brakes.
It has zilch to do with the handbrake.

could also be your brake fluid is low... whitch means either your pads will be worn out or you have a leaky caliper

i get it regulary as i have a major leak... i have to refill brake fluid every two weeks... ull no if ur brakes were stiff and now are loose. or u feel a click when u push it in.. i know where the problem is i just dont no what it is called if anyone knows wot it is called it wud b very helpful.. (ill try explain but i dnt no wot any of the names r as im still learning so bare wif me) its behind the drivers side rear wheel.. it isnt part of a wheel and has metal cables going through it as if the fluid comes from the front the goes through this part then to the wheels.. it also has a bar that goes diagonal to the center of the car and has a little chain on it which is connected to anoter bar that goes to the wheels. if anyone knows what part at the top of the diagonal bar is (which has the metal cables through it) is called it wud b helpfull please... and thanks.

It's called a brake caliper and you should get it fixed as soon as you can. Just go to a wrecker and ask for a rear drivers side brake caliper - shouldn't cost more than $30.
    Please get it done soon.

The brake warning light also comes on when the pedal has travelled too far.
