Ok to get it off , take off number plate. open boot. undo 5 nuts . open the number plate light cases and push the light out/off while pulling the garnish off.

Then just give it a light sand and maybe a quick wipe with some bug n grease remover
then just use some touch up paint about 4-5 coats , then when dry use a coat of clear coat

Have a look at my thread for a pic if yah want

Agh I took mine off the other day to give the underneat a cut and polish to find each end was broken.. so to the paintshop for me

How much should I be paying for a new / wrecked garnish though?
    Also what grade sandpaper?

$5-$25 for the garnish. Wouldn't pay much more.
I would use 400 grit and 600 if your really keen but just 400 would be fine.
Primer would be the go because I have seen it show the reflector part after awhile even after 4 coats!
