with the ecotec motors are they ment to heat up preety quick like abit over half way then fan kicks in and back down to half??
just asking since the vn dont really heat up quick

yeap this is normal and there are quite a few threads on this with a heap on info in them.

yeh i noticed that going from a vn too a vs, concerned me at first aswell.
Yep perfectly normal. Nothing to worry about at all. Just make sure you are running good quality coolant concentrate, not the cheap premixed stuff... no good for the commodore V6 engines at all.

ECOTEC DOES HEAT UP A BIT BUT IT IS NORMAL.
Behaves like you explained when sitting still in traffic, if it's when you're driving you have issues.
