when idling in my vs the temp gauge starts to rise quite a lot but as soon as i begin driving again it cools down once more, does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it? thanks
define 'quite a lot', its normal for the gauge to reach 1/2
heres a thread that was just posted on the same topic Ecotec
swap the sender unit over for fanif its black put a white one in that will turn fan on at lower temps
It's fine. Nothing wrong with the temperature gague reaching 1/2 way. Once it gets around that mark the thermo fan will kick in and cool the engine. Whilst driving not idling the car is sucking in more air flowing through the front of the car, hence keeping the car cooler.
Why worry if it's not over-heating. Don't modify anything - go and buy yourself a service manual and refer to that for normal operating procedures. I've noticed some people here do a lot of guessing. NOT EVERYONE - it's mostly full of helpful information.
FYI - running an engine 'cold' will do more damage than normal operating temp's. Unless your fan is not working, leave the f**king thing alone!.

Anything up to 2/3 is normal on the gauge for the ecotec, the gauge is very indicative of whats going on. Normal running temps would be around 1/3 or 1/4 depending on the ambient temps, obviously on a very hot day in peak hour traffic the temperature is going to sit closer to just under half. As long as the cooling fan kicks in around the half way mark or just above, you've got nothing to worry about. From memory the low speed fan kicks in around 104 deg C and high speed around 110 deg C. Incidentally the fan actually turns off regardless of the temperature at around 60 km/h as the air flow at that speed is sufficient to cool the radiator.
