Default Fiberglass pannels, laws in NSW.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone had any info about the laws regarding fitting Fiberglass pannels (Bonnet in particular) to commodores?

I live on the coast, and my VS parks practically on the beach as i live right next to it, and my bonnet is crumbling away from rust before my eyes as all my other cars have.... The more glass pannels i can make for her the better, (i work with glass) coz it is one hell of a car and i'd like to have it for a long time to come.

    Any help appreciated....

P.S. Tried calling the RTA about it, and the retard on the fone didn't even know what fiberglass was lol.

in the general discussion section I think there are stickied threads regarding modification laws, in those threads will be links to information regarding your state.

    Give them a go mate.

I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to unless it's a track car (i THINK), as the fibreglass can be extremely dangerous when it breaks in an accident. The sharp shards of fibreglass can seriously injure and kill people when they snap or shatter under impact.

May also affect crashworthiness to some extent, crumple zones and all that.

    Ohhh yeah, good point ^^^

True, fibreglass just shatters and splinters alot easier, whereas steel can crumple and compact and take more of a hit with less possible risk to the driver.

Like putting someone in a piece of paper and one person in a piece of rubber and scrunching them both up. The person in the rubber would come off better. That's what i think anyway, i could be wrong.

I know there is a company that has theirs approved by the appropriate road authorities. Jump on a google search.

EDIT: actually i believe it was carbon fibre now that i think about it. either way google knows all

You can't change the bonnet on a car newer than about..... 97 or something like that when the frontal impact laws came in. But a panel that does nothing like a bonnet should be ok to be made from fibreglass before those laws. If you want to make everything fibreglass you really need an older car to get away with it

Hmm, mine is a 97 model.... lets hope that i can slip thru.... I found a number for the RTA Technical enquiries, and my old man said that i should be able to get a list of engineering signatories off them.
