could also be the alternator regulator, i had this same problem and after checking everything it turned out to be the regulator

There will be an issue with the charging system, as others have suggested the regulator could be stuffed, or the brushes could also be worn. I'm not sure if the same problem happens on the V8 engine, but on the V6 the main B+ wire and connection burns out at the back of the alternator, which could cause some issues.

Also check that all the connections to the battery are clean and secure, and also check that the wiring and connections at the alternator is also secure. You can also check the voltage with a multimeter to see what the charging rate is like, it should be around 14 volts at idle with no accessories ie lights or air conditioning running.

Yea, as Harvs82 said, that wire at the back of the alternator is prone to problems. Happened with mine mate, got a battery light first, then got it checked and told there was no problem. Two weeks later and bang, no charge wat so ever, 11 at night, no electronics, lights, box, etc. That sukd.

Obviously with yours' being a 5L, could be different, but it's still worth a look mate.

check the fat wire at the back of alternator, they have a habit of braking off. You'l have to take the engine cover off.

Check to make sure the terminals are clean and secured properly. Also, do you have a multimeter? You can check the voltages at the battery and alternator aswell to see where the problem is.
