How much of a dent needs to be put into the sump before it starts hitting the crankshaft?
Always been a bit worried about what looks like the idiot that owned it before me has been jacking the car up using the sump, its got the castle shaped indentations and all.Luckily it doesnt leak.
main question: how many millimeters deep are we talking?
mine's fairly smashed too, tyrefitter jacked the car on the sump, plus i dented it further changing the mounts. hasn't had any effect at all. probably an inch deep dent. i'll get a pic if i remember

Vee-ard,
If the car has been jacked up on the oil reservior, there won't be a problem of the pan hitting the crank, but if it has been dented is more than 3/8's or 1/2 an inch (10-12.5mm) there is a real problem of the pick up getting sealed and the engine hurting itself. It may not be completely sealed and thats why you haven't noticed anything but in the long run the engine won't like it. I would recommend you get it fixed or replaced soon....

If you are talking a V8 sump this is a picture of a VR-vt sump on the inside ,to give you some idea of how much damage it might take before something stuffs up
