undo a trans cooler line off the radiator and let half a litre of fluid out at a time

how much did you overfill it?

also are you checking it correctly? not just pull the dipstick out when the car is off and parked

Yeah, I had a leak from the speed sensor, so to balance the leak I over filled the fluid. I replaced the seal/ring but forgot about the excess fluid (approx 1 litre) - so hwat damage do we do? do the solinoids stuff up? I have syfenned some fluid out of the filler tube and cannot get a clean level reading - still has more fluid than I need.
the only issue I am having is the occasional upshift from 2nd to 3rd takes a higher rev, but not always. otherwise most of the excess fluid blew out of the breather valve.

well, its hard to say exactly what damage you'll do, but auto trans operate on fluid pressure, so if you put more than you're supposed to in, its not going to operate within the right pressures. Sure it may work, but not as intended.

Yeah but you have to do it when the car is running, or rlse when it's been sitting overnight all the fluid has drained back into the trans pan giving a really full reading, there is less in the pan when the car is running because the fluid is being used.

As the post above, I was told by a guy at work to have the car running and cycle through all the gears a couple of times then check it right after doing that so it didn't all sit in the pan.

Check when your motor and therefore transmission is hot, like after driving 20 k's. Always check when it's hot and idling in park. This is the correct way to check the fluid
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
