just lower it as much as you want, but if your car scrapes over every curb or speed bump or is always hitting the bumpstops i think that is too low and is making your car unsafe

your all wrong. The law on lowering is if you can drive over a coke can and it is still standing by the time you pass it, then it is legal.

VN - VS, superlows are about the legal limit

VT - VZ, SSL as far as I know...can't be too sure

The thing is, coke cans are HIGHER than 100mm, so even if your car hits it, it could still be legal. The coke can as a legal lowering tool is about as factual as cop chips. Unless were talking macca's fries, most cop cars have those.

How about you ring your transport authority?

90% of cops wouldn't know a spring from a power steering pump.

so your telling me that the adr's regarding the minimum and maximum heights for headlights and tail lights are wrong, if you want i can dig thru the adr's and find the relevant sections and point you to them the minimum is 50mm for a vehicle made after 1961 and 600mm before 1961 might be wrong on the 1961 but it is around then.

And the max height for headlights and tail lights is around 1400mm from memory this is why some 4wd's have lights that dont work either side of the rear windscreen, but have lights down lower that work.

You couldn't be more wrong. Those 4WDs have a 2nd set of lights lower down, because the side lights are obstructed by the spare wheel. Nothing to do with heights.

Apparently Aus is the only country that need this to be done to sell their car here.

Im not wrong, you mis-read what i wrote, i do agree some do have the spare wheel obstructing the view and these one are located below the rear windscreen, cant think of a 4wd of the top of my head but i have painted green the location of the lights im talking about, it also shows what you are talking about in regards to the spare wheel.

Even lights in the green spots, is regarded as being obstructed by the spare wheel by the ADRs. THAT is why only the Aus market has the lower fitted lights.

Ok point taken, the point I was making was, the size of a coke can (around 120mm) is about as low as you can go. 100mm is the law someone rightly said when fully laiden.

right, what I was talking about. I spoke to a cop about it once when he pulled over my mate and he said "if you can't drive over a coke can without knocking it over then it's too low. You must have a coke can's clearance between the ground and the car's lowest point."

ok well I might be wrong about the whole coke can thing, but that's what people and a cop have told me so that was my 2c to pillzor's question

Your first mistake was believing what a cop said. They are NOT mechanics. Most barely know any ADRs.

Saying that if you can't drive over a coke can your car is illegal is misinformation. What if your car has 110mm clearance? You'd knock over the 120mm coke can, but thats still above 100. As said, its not a legal device.

Certain 'trained' cops do have a device, which is a 100mm wheel on a stick, which they can check for the 100mm clearance

Theres the and australian standards, where lowest part of the car has to be a certian amount of height 100mm, its not just the side of the car, if for example your exhaust hangs lower then your sides, then you exhaust has to be 100mm, its from the lowest point of the car, hope you under stand wat i mean

I love hearing the old "coke can" theory. What a load. Why can't it be a Sprite can?
