Hey guys,
Picked myself up vs exec for a daily on the weekend, looked and drove great 180k green sunroof for $3000, however
Next day driving It I put my foot down a bit taking off from the lights and it sortof completely stopped, made a clunck then took off again, then thismorning on the way to work in the cold at 4am, when I would come to a stop at the lights it would take off again in what felt like 3rd gear and took a while to drop back to first, once the car warmed up a bit it stopped doing it. Also makes some terrible grinding in third sometimes.
Car drives like a dream during the day tho which is why I never picked up on it..
Now im no idiot I know its farked but im just curious as to what is actually playing up in the trans before I go replace it, I know its a long shot but how likely is a service going to fix this..
What is a fair price on a new trans..
Any help/ feedback much appreciated
Cheers Daniel![]()
Hi there
From what you are saying there it doues sound like your gearbox is well and truly shot
A service is not likely to do much for the problem.
A decent rebuild on a commodore box including torque convertor overhaul should cost you about 1000-1200, possibly more including removal and installation.
Hope this helps

it takes 42 muscles to frown but only 5 to slap whoever it was that annoyed you
or u could run the codes and if it picks up on being a solinoid im more than willing to send you a tested one at postage cost
Dude he asked for help not smart arse remarks.
Yer sounds like needs rebuild, Maybe if you change the box oil it might be smoother but I doubt it.
You could always buy a secondhand box to put in, just have a good look before you decide to buy it.
If its making a grinding noise I doubt it could be a solanoid but I have been wrong before.
Cheers max
Cheers guys, im going to keep an eye out for a second hand box and either install it myself or see how mcuh it will cost to get a shop to do it.
Car was perfectly fine today, it only plays up when very cold (3deg) half of the way to work till it warms up and at around 80kays it makes a noise sometimes.
Still very happy with the car otherwise
Any ideas how much a shop would charge to swap a transmission? roughly ofcourse.
Cheers.
Cost me $200 to get a ford box changed.
For a proper reco at a reputable shop including a reco torque converter you are looking at $1800 to $2000 drive in drive out. There are cheaper places but if you are going to keep the car for a few years it pays to spend that bit more for a quality job. In the meantime I'd add some transmission conditioner to the trans - it can smooth the changes and delay the final failure.
The kilometres travelled (180K) are about right for the trans to fail so don't feel bad. With a new trans the car should be good for many years.
Yeah i dont really want to throw that kind of money at the car, i have another money pit for a car i just need this one for a to b type driving.
$150-$400 for a second hand one to put in sounds alot more appealing..
In that case just try the trans conditioner first, then look for a good 2nd hand box - check the oil colour before it is removed from the donor car and be prepared to pay up to $600 from a wrecker for a good one (you won't want to do it twice). On top of that you'll need to change the fluid and filter so add another $70 for that. This all presumes you are going to do all the work yourself.
