Hi all,
I'm just trying to chase a bit of advice on the current temp issues of my 5.0L vr.
I noticed that the temp gauge had been creeping over the 1/2 way mark.
So i have changed the coolant put a new thermostat in and changed the radiator cap.
I noticed that the temp gauge has been going up to just over 1/2 and higher at times but doesn't seem to get hotter but cooler at the lights!
The car has not been leaking or dumping coolant out the header tank!
The clutch fan is working fine also,
So my question's are! Could this just be a dodgy sender unit or is the radiator in new of a professional flush.
I have also topped the car up and made sure their is no air trapped to cause the problem too.
Any info would be great, Also if it is a sender unit issue where is the unit located and a ruff price would be great.
Regards, Woody
I have a VR 5.0L that has only done 56000 original K's, My problem was that it ran too cold, my thermostat was stuck open, so I replaced this, noticing it looked a bit brown and slimy, (not rust)
because I needed a new heater tap, I got it professionally flushed, and to my surprise about a litre (it only holds 5 litres of coolant) was pure brown slimy muddy stuff.
so in short, if you can afford it, a professional flush never hurts and if it still does overheat a bit, then you have your answer, very most likely a dodgy temp sender.
(also dont be fooled by what got me initially after I changed the thermostat and the temp ran normal again, I thought it was sitting too high on halfway, but realised that due to an optical illusion caused by the last bar on the temp guage being red, it was actually on the bar UNDER halfway. The halfway bar will be a half sized line, not a larger line on the guage.)![]()
I recently changed my inlet manifold and also renewed the temperature senders.
To my surprise the temperature gauge was sitting on 2/3-3/4 with the new sender. Previously it run at about a 1/3 on the gauge.
I checked the coolent temp in efiLive and it was only 95 deg. I swapped the new sender with my old unit and the gauge reads back at the 1/3 mark.
If possible get the temperature checked via your ECU with efiLive or something similar in case you are chasing a dodgy gauge or sender unit.

the temp sender is under the intake bend on the front of the intake manifold. There is two there. One for the ecu and one for the dash. The one on the left with only 1 wire is the one for the dash. The one with a plug and a few wires is the one for the ecu. At worst get your radiator professionally cleaned out and see how you go as it may be half blocked.
Wes, you need to PM me your number. last weekend
dan, mischa and i struggled for about half an hour to find where to put the new coolant temp sensor.
some of your 5 litre knowledge will surely come in handy![]()
Thanks very much for the help guys have you got aby ruff prices for temp sensors?
haydz may know, but they are pretty cheap. I think the ecu one(the expensive one) is only like $30 or there abouts.
depends where you shop really.
repco wanted 60 or more for the temp sensor (ecu)
where as peps auto only wanted 25 so i went with them.
i got my radiator professionaly cleaned ... 60 percent blocked lol

Thanks heaps guys i'll just take it to a radiator shop and get them to suss weather its a sensor or just needs a proper flush rather than the garden hose.
Otherwise i might go down that path of wasting extra cash, As i like to do alot of these things myself!
Thanks guys it appreciated!
