Question VS starts when its turned off

G'day, I have a Vs with a manual in it, was running fine till today, tried to start it and it wont start, sounds like the starter motor cause it just sits there ticking, but heres the scary bit, I turned it off and took the key out and started looking at the starter motor and the thing starts turning over on its own, no ignition, no key, scared the hell out of me, anybody got any ideas, heres the run down.

had an alarm but previous owner ripped it out, may have found out the problem, my son "washed" the car, engine bay and all, it could be related to the starter relay getting wet and sticking, if it is i'm beating the sh*t outta him, if not then i'll have to investigate more.

My 57 pontiac use to do the same thing ,I end up traceing it to a power wire was laying across the starter wire and the current was able to jump the wire somehow even though they were both insulated ,

Depend on how you looked at the starter motor - normally you need to raise the car so you can look up under....and usually you put your hand up on the wiring connectors and wiggle them a bit. If you were smart you would have already disconnected the battery 'cause you're playing with heavy thick cables that can blow a battery in 5 seconds if shorted. Maybe you were lucky and it was just the small wire to the solenoid that touched for a second and kicked the starter in.
You're not on your own - I had a starter on an old Plymouth come to life whilst I was removing it from the old sidevalve six....with the battery still connected. It bounced around under the car till it blew the battery. That's how I learn't to always disconnect the battery.

I would have picked the starter relay too.

G'day, got the car into holdens today and they rang back telling me the starter is irrepairable, they don't sell them and they are sourcing it from a local business, as I understand it, a manual VS has a Delco Remy starter and an auto has a Bosch, is that correct, now the bods at Holdy's reckon it's $300 for the replacement, is that about right for it. and, for those that are wondering I would never beat the sh*t outta my son, we get along more like mates than dad and son, he's actually bought the car from me now and has got extractors, twin cat exhaust, cold air induction, twin throttle body doohikee for it and heaps more, bloody good kid actually.
