    Default VS SS engine oil

Well I have a vs ss 5lt manual,

Since I have owned it have been using Pennzoil gt street machine 20/50, now repco have stopped selling it and bursons, supercheap and auto barn dont supply it either so I asked around and been told Penrite HPR30 20/60 will be ok to use so I have been using that for a few months now..

Question is, is that grade of oil fine to use or is it to thick/thin? My car currently has 260k on the clock and is a mild vs ss 5lt.

mate you're already using in my opinion the best oil for an EFI 5.0L around.

I would even go so far as to say it was better than the one you were using before. Anything thinner is wasted on an older car. Although if you really wanted, you could use HPR15 for a 15W-50. Which would probably be just as good.

in a fourteen year old commodore you dont need 65 dollar synthetic oil. Im sick of these threads always turning into a sales pitch.

i know they are different engines but it's still a 14 y.o commodore right?..

dunno where you got that from, I said earlier that I use penrite HPR 30. It costs $35.

If you use a 5W synthetic it will find EVERY oil leak in your commodore and drip everywhere if you have any. Hope your engine is in good condition and doesnt have many miles on it.

take it easy mate, its your car, use what you want. Im just a bit concerned that the original post was about whether 20W was too thick or too thin, not "hey buy my 65$ synthetic oil its fully sick for thrashing your car and the oil stays clean too" (even though if the oil is clean its leaving the black shit in your engine still, so as such, not really a good thing)

oh true, and it wasnt ment to sound like i was having a go at you.

i'm not gonna run the $65 shit but i wanted something that would stay clean for a bit longer.

cheers anyway mate. (oh and the VR has 175,xxx just for your info haha)

atm i'll stick with 20w. might go to 15w

w t f that time of the month again?

i didnt say i thrash it either sometimes i give it up 1/2 thats about it i look after cars not thrash them, and for ur informaton i havnt got or had one oil leak in my vs since ive been using it which is comming up to about 2yrs

i havnt got any black shit in my engine my mechanic who pulled it apart said its the cleanest ecotec hes seen

i just suggested an oil to S2_VR_; as he asked whats a good oil for the 3.8........ his choice weather to use it or not so no need to be a knob jockey about it

not being a nob jockey mate, but you've hijacked "oil type" threads before. Just answer the original persons question or dont post at all, im sure when he asks if 20W is too thick or too thin, he doesnt want to hear you selling 5W to S2_VR_

I've got nothing against the type of oil you use, just dont hijack threads.

So I'm guessing the oil I use is fine? lol

Also I have another question where should my oil pressure gauge sit?
On start up goes around 25.. Sits about 25 while cruising and goes to about 50 when I give it a bit and when I stop at the lights it goes lower then 25 on idle at the lights.. like a bit above 0 is that normal?
