I Have a VR CommodoreS seriesII just after i bought the car i started having trouble ive searched for other posts but cant seem to find any the same. PLEASE HELP
When driving at low revs the gearbox worked fine but as soon as i started giveing it the S*** hit the fan, the gearbox is free reving between each gear and is leaking trans fluid from what i asume is a seal behind the touqe converter.
Is there any way i can fix myself as im fairly mechanically minded
Can anybody help me figure out what to do as i dont have alot of money to just replace it!
hi! sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like your gears are slipping. Not good considering sometimes it means a whole new gearbox. On the oil seal, it could be your rear main seal. Its a common thing with the vr vs model. I replaced it when l had to get a new tranny for my vr. It shouldn't cost you too much to go to your mechanic. Take it to your mechanic in all honesty... it could be a solnoid or even a completely fudged transmission (bands are worn or the torque converter is not locking up). The rear main seal is available from holden and any spare parts place (we have them at repco). As for a replacement box, you will have to find out whether it is a 12pin (4hdd) or a 13(5hdd) box incase you need to replace it. Mine was 12pin and ended up getting one through work.

I assume you have checked fluid level, if not check it and see what the level is topping it up might fix the free reving.
A service should be around the $200-$250 mark depending what wrong with it from a tranny shop
As you are short on cash the first thing I would do is add a can of transmission treatment available from any auto parts shop.....should cost less than $20 and usually will stop leaks and make the shifts grip better. This may give you some breathing space till you figure out whether to look for a 2nd hand trans or spend big on a reco trans.
Unless you plan on keeping the car for a long time the cheapest option is a 2nd hand trans - usually $300-500 with a 3 month warranty (fitted yourself). Otherwise you're up for $1200-2000 for a reco trans. A service is simply an oil and filter change which may not make any difference (my opinion only) - you can do this yourself for about $60. On the 4L60E there are no adjustments like the old transmission where you could tighten the bands etc. If the solenoids are sticking they will usually log an error code. Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)
Good Luck.
