Default Which OIL for VS Stroker 215i

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hi There

I have a HSV VS2 Senator 215i, stroker (orig) and was wondering what oil other people use in this motor and how much oil.

I have used ****s Super Synthetic 5/40, but am a little unsure if I will use it again. I know they originally made the oil for Mobil and it aint chaep at $64 for 5 litres.

    Is 5/40 too thin???

Thanks look forward to hearing from other owners.....

not much difference between 10w40 and 5w40 apart from him getting oil around his engine on cold starts slightly quicker then you

*sigh* this always happens in oil type threads.

5W is rated at minus 20 degrees for effective and protecting cold starts, we're in australia mate. you dont need thinner than 15w in these older cars. especially on higher mileage cars.

also dude, do you realise that the thinner the oil is, the easier it runs off the surfaces its supposed to lubricate in the upper galleries? ie: there will be less oil in those areas when you go to start it the next morning? so any advantage 5w has of getting around your engine faster on cold starts is negated by the fact that more has run off lubricating surfaces overnight than thicker oils.

bottom line is: use whatever oil you want, as long as you change it regularly(ie: at least every 5000kms), I cant see it making much difference.

You raise a valid point, was going the 10/40 but picked the 5/40, next time will move up at least 5 maybe 10.

Mine has low kms - 88kms as well.

The oil "thingy" raises more questions than answers.. Ive read many posts but I think you are right, buy a suitable oil for the climate you are in and change as often as you can....

What do you think about Fuchs??? Any one out there with the same motor?

I just use mineral oil in my 5ltr, i've heard to many conflicting stories about the shear point of the synthetic stuff and it causing bearings to pickup ect.... Its cheap ($20= 5ltrs of 20-50) and if you change it regulary it dosnt really matter much at all.

Hi guys, I have a vr senator 215, when i first got it with 49 000 in 2000 it was running Mobil 1, at 72 000 it spun a bearing and there was a lot of wear on my bearing caps. I rebuilt the motor with acl race series gear, after speaking to acl they recommended a good quality mineral based oil. I found pennzoil GT PERFORMANCE RACING oil to be really good you can go for their GT PERFORMANCE aswell. I now after a few extra mods and a tune am using ROYAL PURPLE 20W50, it is fantastic but at $100+ for 5 litres its not cheap. If you speak to engine builders they hate the magnetic oils as it blunts their tools when they do a rebuild, i would recomend the pennzoil oil for application and then when you do a rebuild and chase some power step up to something like the royal purple.
Just my 2cents worth, hope this helped. GOOD LUCK
