    Default Oil Problem

After driving for about 5 mins, the oil light starts to flicker on and off for about 2 mins that goes solid. ANother 2-3mins later a strange noise starts to come from motor. I've checked the oil and it is fuel only did oil change about 6 weeks ago. when you turn car off problem seems to reset and starts all over again. I have a feeling it could be oil pump as there is a bit of oil in the rail next to it. Any help would be great

This is for a VR 94 model

    Cheers

    Default Iol Filter?

While at first glance, it would appear to be an oil pump problem, oil pump failures are very rare.

There are a number of things that could cause the symptoms that you describe.

    1) The most common cause of oil low pressure lights is a shortage of oil. If your level is OK, then this is not the case.

    2) The second most common, imho, is a failure of the oil pressure switch. I have had that one happen a couple of times. However, if the engine starts to sound harsh after the oil light comes on, then I suspect that oil pressure is in fact low.

    3) The next potential cause is a blocked filter. Did you change the filter at the same time as the oil change? Are you sure that it screwed on properly? Might the oil seal ring have slipped during tightening of the filter? (Did you put some oil on the seal before tightening?)

    4) The final cause could be a pump failure. It is possible to buy oil pressure guages that screw into the oil pressure switch so that you can check the pressure with the engine running.

Starting with the cheapest option, I would do another oil/oil filter change. If the light still comes on, then I would buy/try to borrow a pressure guage to verify whether oil pressure is in fact dropping.

For the sake of your pocket, I hope it is a blocked filter. Good luck.

It might also be the oil pick up in the sump itself.
I think from memory it has a strainer on it, that might be clogged up with crap causing the pump to starve for oil. Only prob is you'll have to pull the sump off to check :b:

Oddly enough this problem has just occured to my car.

It turned out to be an air lock in the oil system. When changing the oil filter, obvously there is air in there, which gets trapped in the system. Symptons on my car were identical to yours.

I removed the coil lead, losened off the filter, cranked the motor to "bleed" the oil system, put the tightened the filter, and then started the car.

    Problem fixed!

I wonder what type of oil filter you blokes are using - I know some have a one way valve in them to prevent the filter draining. Also I've noticed that Ryco are not Australian made but now made in South Africa! Then we have the cheaper Chinese filters. I read somewhere about the filtering medium collapsing inside some cheaper filters.
