Default L76 into VS conversion help

    hi all.
I've been offered a cammed 6.0L L76 for a great price, i'm doing some research before i commit to buying this thing and transplanting it into my VS. The only mobs i can find that sell conversion bits for this are Castlemaine Rod Shop and Castle Auto Electrics, if anyone who has done this swap is reading this, what i would like to know is:-

    1. Is there anyone else selling conversion bits for this that im not aware of?

    2. Has anyone bought conversion bits (mounts, starter motor adaptors, CAE's extractors + wiring harness to suit, etc) off these blokes? if so what do u think of their products, would u recommend them?

    3. Are there any major headaches in this conversioni know it wont be as easy as a straight 5L swap but knowing what im in for would be great

    thanks guys
p.s. my driveline, suspension and brakes are already sorted, there will be no smashing of
T5's or frying the stock brakes and headbutting a tyre barrier

Pat Gardner V6 conversion have had a LS1 conversion kit for VB-VS Commodores on their "Coming Soon" page for a while. Maybe shoot them a call and see if they've investigated a L76 transplant.

Rod Shop seem to be the go, they have been around forever. If it helps, my best mates dad bought a Supra 5 speed conversion for a HZ Kingswood back in the early 80's and they were really good.

I guess the only thing I could say is, be prepared to spend lots of cash.

    What transmission are you using?

Better make up your mind quick, as their home page says that the business is for sale.

if i go ahead with the swap i'll run a T56 6 speed, i'll be near Mal Woods shop soon so i'll suss out what conversion bits he's got.
ya not wrong about it being expensive, but i dont think i can knock back a very low km 6litre thats got 400hp at the tyres plus the computer tuned to suit for 5 grand. old mate took us for a spin and my old 304 has never felt the same since

Any conversion kit is not a hassle free bolt in job, you will find things dont line up and need minor mods to fit. as each car is different.
EG a car that was used to go to church on Sundays and bingo on Wednesday is not going to be the same as a car that has been thrashed and used to tow stuff with.

Normally I'd say why wast your money but you've got a really clean ride and it looks like it would be worth the cost of the conversion, good luck.

I'm putting a L98 in to my VS... it's costing almost $30K in parts.

    General breakdown:

    L98 Crate motor = $4.5K
    Missing accessories for L98 = $500
    T56 gearbox and clutch = $5K
Hydraulic pedal box, and things like mounts for the box...etc = $2K
    LHS start conversion = $900
    Engine mounts = $250
Custom wiring harness and computers = $3K
    Extractors = $3K
Rest of exhaust system = $2K
    Fuel system = I'm budgeting $3K
    Cooling system = I'm budgeting $2.5K
    "Engine mods" like cam...etc = $4K

That's the general gist to get the engine in and running and costs about $26-$30K (engine mods are optional)

You will also need to spend money on brakes and the rest of the drive line like the diff...etc.

I'm going to be keeping cruise control and air con, most people don't bother keeping these (hence my custom wiring loom) keeping the aircon adds another $1-1.5K to the above price

Hope that helps give some "realistic" costs on putting a 6L in

    You obviously have no idea?

Only 1 place sells "off the shelf" extractors for VN-VS LSX conversions and they cost $1800... and that is CAE.

They are made out of average materials and still require modding of the firewall to fit.

Custom stainless extractors made to fit your own car are $2.5-3K depending on the material and HPC coating...etc.

IMHO it's worth spending the bit more for a custom set over some shit off the shelf ones that dont fit.

$3K is not unbelivable, its what you pay for decent stuff

See above... and the other 2K or so is for a full stainless system with decent cats and mufflers.

My budget is $5K for the exhaust, if I don't spend that much then I come in under budget and won't complain

I don't want an off the shelf piece of shit cat back system

Bought it several months ago from GM Motorsport... literally a few weeks before prices started going sky hi!

What does your engine weigh as supplied? I have had numerous weights quoted from 95 kg to 350 lb.....
