Hi,
I have a friend that has a VS Automatic that is having a problem on take off. When she tries to take off, the car will just rev until about 1500-2000 rpm before it will move. Once it is moving there is no problem.
The transmission fluid is very dirty and when she took it to the transmission place to ask, he said that there was no point servicing it as it would be a stuffed converter and that a service would make no difference. He also said that as the converter is damaged there would most likely be much more damage to the box itself and that a rebuild at about 2500 would be required.
He wants $55 just to plug the scan tool in to check for fault codes to confirm the problem. I am not close enough to be able to go over and check the fault codes using the paperclip trick.
I did a search for similar problems but just wanted to make sure.
Thanks.
Sounds like the car is in Limp Home Mode (restricted to 3rd gear and reverse). I'd get het to get a 2nd opinion as "off hand" statements are sometimes designed to freak the customer out. If the 2nd place confirms the first then she needs to decide whether she wants to spend $2500 or sell it or fix it via a wrecker. Maybe you can walk her the the 'paperclip trick' over the phone.
Hope it turns out OK and welcome to the forum.
replace the fluid
^i agree
fair possibility the transmission guy would have had dollar signs popping out of his eyes when she rocked up, sh*ts me that. try 5L of fresh dexIII and go from there...
Thanks for the replys.
Just got them to test it and it produced 12, so all ok there. Also got them to test it by going 1-2-3-D and it goes absolutely fine then.
Its only when you take off in drive. By the revs sounds like it could be in limp home mode.
Hopefully only dirty fluid.
when you checked codes did you wait for a while you get the first code 3 times then it may flash somethign else if its a stored code
